It’s the movie we’ve all been waiting for: The Dark Knight Rises. This is the final film in Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, and I must say, it was worth it. Every freaking penny. Every minute of waiting. As great as The Dark Knight was with Heath Ledger’s outstanding performance, Nolan manages to maintain that level of brilliance for an excellent end to the series. The Dark Knight Rises is a tale of darkness and hope, of despair and triumph, and throughout the entire film, the viewer is kept guessing which way things will go. Is Bane going to kill Batman? Will Gotham be wiped out? Will anyone survive the chaos?

Being a great lover of villains, I was apprehensive about Bane. When they revealed the first images of him, his mask looked funny. When they revealed his voice, he sounded funny. I just couldn’t quite picture him as the next best villain. How on earth could Bane top the Joker? Well, Bane might not top the Joker, but having seen the movie, he certainly rose to the same level. Bane was a very impressive villain. He was both cerebral and physically impressive. At times he came across as an unstoppable brawler, duking it out with Batman and giving more than he took. You could fee the power of the character and the emotional weight of the destruction he wrought. The Joker might have been an element of raw chaos, but Bane uses it in such a focused way that it’s even more terrifying. He is a physical embodiment of chaos spreading violence as he goes with a chilling streak of evil that is difficult to swallow. It’s not so much that he’s a cruel character, though he is, but that he’s so…cold. The icing on the cake is the sheer amount of power that he wields.

Against Bane is Batman. We’ve seen his creation, and we’ve seen him turn into the Dark Knight, but in this film we see a lot of change for Batman. I don’t want to give anything away, so I’ll keep this brief and vague. Batman is in this movie. What Nolan does with Batman is great. Go see this movie.

Too vague? Well you’ll get to see more than just Batman. Nolan utilizes Gordon, Alfred, Catwoman, Fox, and that new cop guy (Blake) for all their worth. Each of them has great roles and there’s tremendous acting all around. Toss on a great soundtrack, awesome visual effects and a truly stunning story, and you get the movie of the year. Yes. Movie. Of. The. Year. If you go see a movie this year, this should be the film.

Be warned though, this film is like a seesaw with two nuclear bombs bucking bronco on both sides. The story will keep you guessing on which one will blow, but rest assured, it’s all worth it, and the ending is great.

Without a doubt, I give The Dark Knight Rises a spectacular five out of five metal bikinis. I didn’t think it could be done, but Nolan did it: the perfect ending to a great Batman trilogy.
