Here is this week’s Around the Web.

Book News

  • For horror fans, you might be familiar with the Australian horror flick Wolf Creek. Not only is the movie getting a sequel in February, but a book series as well. Penguin Books will be releasing Wolf Creek: Origin February 1st, a prequel to the original film. The book will be by authors Greg Mclean and Aaron Sterns who are also the writers of the films. Alongside that will be Wolf Creek: Desolation Game by Greg Mclean and Brett McBean. Like Origin, it’s a prequel novel. Both are being published over in Australia so I’m not sure when they’ll be available elsewhere, however Amazon does have a US eBook listing for Origin and Desolation Game with a January 2nd release.
  • Jason Fry did a nice Q&A for a young fan. In his letter, he included a mention for three new Star Wars books he’s got coming out and one that’s on hold.
  • Martha Wells has a nice year end wrap-up post for fans wanting to make sure they didn’t miss out on anything.
  • Paul S. Kemp talked a little about The Godborn and Egil & Nix over on Fantasy Book Critic.
  • Plus an update on The Sentinel by Troy Denning, “Just finished proofreading the galleys for my Sundering novel, THE SENTINEL (due out in April). Boy, it’s fun to be in the Realms again!”
  • Kevin J. Anderson is also holding a bad joke contest for his Dan Shamble, Zombie PI character McGoo on Facebook.

Tim Siedell Talks ‘Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows’

Comic Book Resources posted an interview with Tim Siedell who talks about his new upcoming series with Dark Horse Comics, Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows. They also have a look at the cover for #2 and one of the interior panels for #1.

Tim, tell us a bit about the central concept behind “Darth Vader and the Cry of Shadows.” Where does it pick up with Vader and how does it relate to your recently-concluded series “Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin?”

Tim Siedell: The two stories aren’t related, but in a way they are connected. The evolution of young Vader continues.

In “Ninth Assassin,” Vader was freed up to be a badass. That’s the word that kept coming back to me from readers: “badass.” And because he was surrounded by a motley assortment of characters with their own moral deficiencies, there was some satisfaction in that. “Cry of Shadows” starts out that way, as well. Our main character, a disillusioned clone trooper who has a bone to pick with the Jedi, practically worships Vader’s abilities as a warrior. But where does badass end and evil begin? Let’s put it this way, Vader doesn’t become the most feared man in the galaxy by just being a badass.

Comic Book Resources posted an interview with Tim Siedell, the writer for the upcoming Dark Horse Comics series Darth Vader and the Ninth Assassin.

“There are a lot of bad guys in the Star Wars universe. Some wear masks, others wear the clothes of a rich businessman and some tempt you with appealing whispers. Surround Vader with enough bad guys and he starts to look downright good by comparison — or not. By the end of the story, Vader has a pretty good idea of what he’s capable and not capable of doing.” -Tim Siedell
