Star Trek: Before Dishonor is a novel in The Next Generation line of Star Trek novels featuring The Borg. It was written by Peter David and was released in November of 2007.

Wow! I am shocked at how good this book is. After reading the Destiny trilogy and Greater Than the Sum (both published after this book) I was worried I would feel Borg fatigue. This book is by far the biggest, most epic, and most well written of the bunch. This might go down as one of my favorite Star Trek books ever made!!!

Book Review: ‘Greater Than the Sum’ by Christopher L. Bennett

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Greater Than the Sum is a standalone novel written by Christopher L. Bennett and was released in August of 2008.

What makes this book so interesting is the frame of reference that it has. This book came out after a string of Borg related standalones like Resistance, Death in Winter, Homecoming/Farther Shore, and the ever climactic Before Dishonor. However, it is the prelude to the Destiny Trilogy, the trilogy billed as “The Beginning and the End of the Borg.” This would create a dilemma for Bennett, as his story would need to be really good to stand out in a crowded field. Thankfully, Bennett was up to the task, for this is an excellent book.

Book Review: ‘Immortal Coil’ by Jeffrey Lang

Star Trek: Immortal Coil is a Next Generation novel heavily centered around Data, A.I., and lots of Star Trek history. It was written by Jeffrey Lang and was published by Pocket Books in February 2002.

If you love Data, then this is the book for you. Data takes the lead in this novel as the Enterprise crew must solve a mystery involving Bruce Maddox and an accident that occurs at his laboratory.

I went into this book expecting a more ethereal, philosophical look into androids and into Data’s history. That seemed to be the pitch of the book from the blurb and also what word of mouth on the book was. Instead, this book is actually a fun episode-sized adventure with an android mystery to it. I wasn’t disappointed in the book, as I find those novels much more enjoyable than the scientific exploration ones, but I did feel that the book had false marketing.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Kahless, is a standalone novel by Michael Jan Friedman which was released in July of 1996.

For the last several months I’ve been focusing on big series such as the Destiny Trilogy, the Fall series, and the Prey trilogy. I thought it might be worth picking up a standalone and that’s exactly what I got in Kahless. However, reading this book made me realize why I appreciate reading series so much.

This book is essentially two stories in one book that alternate back and forth. The main story in the modern age focuses on Kahless the Clone and his goals to unmask a plot to assassinate Gowron, the current leader of the Klingons. Kahless is joined by his friends Captain Jean Luc Picard and Worf, son of Mogh, as well as some other important characters. This feels like a standard Star Trek political thriller story, albeit a very small one. This plotline was somewhat predictable, but it allows the reader to learn about Klingon culture by visiting with various Klingons. All too often, stories focus on Worf or other main Klingons who just provide exposition about Klingons, but we rarely get to just spend time in the Klingon culture. I really enjoyed this aspect of the story.

Star Trek: The Next Generation: Takedown is a standalone novel featuring the crews of the Titan, Aventine, and Enterprise-E, written by John Jackson Miller, and released in February of 2015.

I’ll start out by saying that this was the first Star Trek I ever read back in 2017. I had watched some of the shows, but didn’t know where to start in the literature. I’ve been a longtime fan of John Jackson Miller’s Star Wars novels, and I listened to an interview (here on Roqoo Depot of all places) where he discussed how he makes every book he writes introductory. He knows that every book is someone’s first, so he actively tries to give them the relevant information to start. I always admired that and thought I’d jump in. This truly is an excellent place to jump in, and it’s had me hooked on Trek literature ever sense.

When renegade Federation starships begin wreaking destruction across the Alpha Quadrant, Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise are shocked to discover that the mastermind behind this sudden threat is none other than Picard’s protégé and friend: Admiral William T. Riker. The newly minted admiral is on board the U.S.S. Aventine as part of a special assignment, even as the mystery deepens behind his involvement in the growing crisis. But the Aventine is helmed by Captain Ezri Dax—someone who is no stranger to breaking Starfleet regulations—and her starship is by far the faster vessel…and Riker cannot yield even to his former mentor. It’s a battle of tactical geniuses and a race against time as Picard struggles to find answers before the quadrant’s great powers violently retaliate against the Federation…
