New ‘Merlin’ Season 5 Trailer
July 31, 2012 at 8:47 am | Posted in Fantasy, Syfy | Leave a commentTags: BBC, merlin, syfy
Just released by BBC, the new season 5 Merlin trailer. Julian Murphy (Merlin co-creator) has this to say about the new season:
“I think it’s interesting because you saw a glimpse (of a stronger, focused and more powerful Merlin) at the end of the last series, particularly when he killed Agravaine. We’re really interested in taking him on that journey with all its dangers and the temptations it will bring, so that will be a big part of the fifth series.”
Also be on the lookout for some guest stars (hint: Game of Thrones).
Merlin will be carried on BBC One in the fall and for U.S. audiences on Syfy in January, 2013

Stephen King Alert: Syfy is developing, as a long form project, King’s 1987 bestseller, The Eyes of the Dragon. On board for the script are I, Robot’s Jeff Vintar and Battlestar Galactica’s Michael Taylor; executive producers are Taylor and Bill Haber. The Eyes of the Dragon has something in common with King’s other works. Although it is set in a fictional world where a young prince (falsely accused of and imprisoned for his father’s murder) must face a devious wizard, Eyes continues King’s practice of a character who’s appeared in his other works. In this case, Flagg, who was in both the Dark Tower series and The Stand.

A Novel Approach to Novels: How many times have you seen the question, “Hai, I’m new to the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and want to start reading the books. Where do I start?”. If you’re like us, you’ve heard it a lot. Since there are about a bazillion Star Wars books (well, maybe not that many, but it seems like it), that’s a tall order and totally subjective to boot. One reader’s soaring-to-new-heights novel is going to be another’s total dreck so how to advise? Well, Tricia at Fangirl Cantina has come up with what we think is really a good idea. You can check out her where to start* article here, and why didn’t someone think of it sooner?
*Most frequent answer: Zim Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy. We have heard of readers who actually didn’t like The Thrawn Trilogy, but we don’t know them personally. We don’t associate with people like that.
Support a Worthy Cause: Speaking of the Star Wars Expanded Universe, EU Cantina has come up with a way to flaunt your total nerditude and be charitable. Buy a #SWEU T shirt from them and their profit from the shirt will be donated to RIF (Reading is Fundamental) to support literacy. You can get the details here.
Friday Fun: Here’s a LOL to start the weekend with. Personally, I’d hire this guy on the spot.

First off and particularly pertinent to this blog is this Sunday’s Oprah’s Next Chapter on her network, Own. The hour long
show features Oprah interviewing Star Wars creator, George Lucas. Included will be a tour of Skywalker Ranch. If you’ve seen her other interviews — Steven Tyler for one — this one should be worth the watch. The show will air Sunday, January 22, 9/8c. Continue Reading Around the Web…

We’re starting out today’s column with a fun find: The new Dark Shadow’s Barnabas Collins from Johnny Dep Italia. Directed by Tim Burton, the remake of the TV soap opera cult classic is set in 1972. The movie co-stars Eva Green
and Michelle Pfeiffer.
And speaking of Johnny Depp: there’s a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie in the works. At least script rewrites in hopes that Johnny will approve and say yes, according to POTC director Rob Marshall (via Hollywood Reporter):
“Terry [Rossio] is writing it and he’s working incredibly hard and he did a draft and rethought it all and started working on it again. You want to make sure you are asking the audience to come back to see an exciting adventure and it has to reach that caliber, and if not there’s no reason to do it. I know Johnny feels the same way: He needs to see a script, but he would be happy — if it’s the right script — to put that hat and sword back on.”
Johnny, just say no.
Inside TV announced that Season two of Game of Thrones will premiere April 1st with 10 episodes. No, this isn’t an April Fools prank.
Monday is season 2 premiere night for Syfy’s Being Human – American version, 9/8 PM EDT/CDT. At 10/9 PM EDT/CDT, Syfy will unfurl their newest show Lost Girl, plot revolving around a succubus AKA Fae. Think kinky.
Movies premiering this weekend:
Loosies, Albatross, Joyful Noise, Underworld: Awakening & Beauty, and the Beast 3D.

Over on Syfy Blastr they held a pumpkin carving contest last month. David Hewlett, aka Dr. Rodney McKay of Stargate: Atlantis picked the winner. After viewing his choice we can understand why. This Vader Unmasked carving is simply amazing. Kudos to artist James Hall.
