The Essential Characters Guide “Paused”

Going through YouTube, I was searching for Star Wars Reads Day coverage and came across a nice video of the Star Wars Reads Day event in Roseville, MN. The event included Star Wars authors Troy Denning and Daniel Wallace. RFBikerScout was nice enough to capture the video and post it for fans to enjoy. Of course the authors talked about their history in Star Wars, their books and lots of other fun topics, but right at the end of the video, Dan said something that caught me off guard. He said that the new Essential Guide to characters book has been paused.
“I was in the middle of–cause it was announced–writing the new Essential Guide to Characters…has kind of…you know, paused, I guess right now because of the movies.” -Daniel Wallace, at 28:16
Now The Essential Characters was slated for an April 15, 2014 release prior to the Disney purchase of Star Wars and the announcement of the sequel movies. Last month that release date was changed in the edelweiss catalog to March 1, 2016, a massive pushback. Without hearing anything from the publishers, it was hard to know whether that date could be trusted. However, hearing Dan say that the book has been paused certainly clears up the matter. While it makes perfect sense to delay the project in order to add all the new characters from Episode VII and possibly even Star Wars Rebels, it’s still sad to see another book being put on hold. Hopefully we’ll get some more positive news soon, especially with hints that there are more Star Wars books yet to be announced for 2014.

Hi everyone, Hans Jenssen here. Richard Chasemore and I will be dipping into this conversation today and if anyone has any questions about illustrating Star Wars Incredible Cross-Sections we’re happy to answer. Ryder is your man if you want to know about the writing, although we worked very closely together for the project. He’s really good to work with and mighty knowledgeable about Star Wars! Basic facts about the Cross-Sections illustrations: Most of the vehicles took between 200-300 hours to complete. Some of the locations artworks took over 600 hours. We work at home and use traditional media for these, paper, pen, ink and paint. Want to know more? Just ask!
How long did the cover art take?
Hans Jenssen: I never kept an exact track of most of the artworks, but my best guess for the AT-AT would be about 250 hours. Star Wars Reads Day Events

Saturday October 5, 2013 is Star Wars Reads Day. Abrams, Chronicle Books, Dark Horse, Del Rey, DK, Quirk Books, Random House Audio, Scholastic, Titan Magazines, and Workman Publishing will all be joining together to help celebrate reading and there will be lots of events going on across the U.S. and even a few international ones.
In addition to that, Goodreads will be doing an online event that everyone can participate in. The online event will include authors Ryder Windham, Jason Fry, Chris Alexander, John Jackson Miller, Hans Jennsen, Rich Chasemore and Simon Beecroft. Plus Dark Horse Comics is getting in on the fun by offering up to 50% off on select Star Wars titles from October 4-6th (you can check out their offers here).

Star Wars artists Chris Trevas, Joe Corroney and Brian Rood will be in Ann Arbor, MI at Barnes & Noble. Authors Aaron Allston and Martha Wells will be in Austin, TX (also at B&N).
