Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

Bombad Radio: Episode 161 starts off with an unboxing of Dungeons & Dragons Next, flows into a con report of SDCC 2014, then jumps into the main feature: an interview with actor Adam Lazarre-White who voiced Jacob in the Mass Effect series. Adam talks about he got into acting, his early career in soap opera, moving into voice acting, the differences between roles, identifying scenes, being the character, and even basing Jacob on Han Solo. Kind of a neat interview and worth listening to if you’re a Mass Effect fan or interesting in acting and voice acting.

Coffee with Kenobi: Episode #22 includes some feedback on the Star Wars Rebels trailer out of SDCC 2014, some comments on the X-wing revealed in the Force for Change video, and the usual “Expresso Shot” from the Bearded Trivia hitting film news including Jurassic World. Consetta Parker stops by to talk about the upcoming Rancho Obi-Wan Gala, and they interview author Ian Doescher. Ian talks about the William Shakespeare Star Wars books, finding the right voices for the characters, and even shares what he’s working on next. Lot of goodness packed into this one episode, so be sure to check it out.

Special Edition: Coffee with Kenobi Discusses SDCC 2014” includes their thoughts on the Star Wars Rebels preview clips and the character of the Inquisitor. Then they with special guest Jeff McGee (Assembly of Geeks) about SDCC and collectibles. Jeff’s always a fun guy to listen to and Star Wars Rebels and SDCC make good discussion topics. Another good one to add to your playlist.

IGN interviewed Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg, consultants on Star Wars Episode VII and writers for the Star Wars spinoff films. While they didn’t reveal any details on any of the projects, they did share their love of films.

Speaking of these worlds, can you tell us, how surprised were you when they said, “Hey, we’re doing more Star Wars, and we’d like you to come back and become involved in this?”

Kasdan: I was pleased that there would be new ones, that there was a chance to capture some of the spirit of the original trilogy that I’d worked on. I thought there’s an audience out there — my grandchildren, lots of original Star Wars people — and there always will be. It’s only good that we try to do some more great ones.

Star Wars Spinoff Films Confirmed

StarWars.com has confirmed that there will be spinoff films beyond Star Wars Episodes VII, VIII, and IX.

One of the standalone films will be written by Lawrence Kasdan, screenwriter of The Empire Strikes BackRaiders of the Lost Ark, and co-writer of Return of the Jedi while the other will be penned by Simon Kinberg, writer of Sherlock Holmes and Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The movies will be separate from the upcoming Episodes VII, VIII, and IX, on which Kasdan and Kinberg are also consulting, and are expected to be released sometime after Episode VII. Each standalone film will focus on a specific character, and two spinoff films are currently confirmed.

In a call to investors, Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, revealed while the original focus was on the highly-anticipated sequel trilogy, the idea of spinoff films was bandied about early and the additional films are now becoming a reality. “We are in development of a few standalone films,” he said, “that are not part of the Star Wars saga…there are now creative entities working on developing scripts for what would be those standalone films.”

No word yet on whether the two spinoff character films by Kasdan and Kinberg will be the rumored Yoda and Jabba the Hutt movies.

UPDATE: Bob Iger spoke a little more about the spinoffs with CNBC.

“There has been speculation about some stand-alone films that have been in development and I can confirm to you today that in fact we are working on a few standalone films. Larry Kasdan and Simon Kinberg are both working on films derived from great Star Wars characters that are not part of the overall saga so we still plan to make Star Wars 7, 8 and 9 roughly over a six year period of time starting in 2005 but they are going to be a few other films release in that period of time too.” -Bob Iger

StarWars.com has officially announced that J.J. Abrams will be directing Star Wars Episode VII.

“It’s very exciting to have J.J. aboard leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie. J.J. is the perfect director to helm this. Beyond having such great instincts as a filmmaker, he has an intuitive understanding of this franchise. He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.” -Kathleen Kennedy

“I’ve consistently been impressed with J.J. as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.” -George Lucas

“To be a part of the next chapter of the Star Wars saga, to collaborate with Kathy Kennedy and this remarkable group of people, is an absolute honor. I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid.” -J.J. Abrams

Of course we also know Michael Arndt will be writing the screenplay, Kathleen Kennedy will be executive producer, and George Lucas will be a creative consultant. StarWars.com also mentioned that Lawrence Kasdan and Simon Kinberg will be “consulting on the project.” Kasdan was a screenwriter for The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. (Note it was previously rumored that Kasdan and Kinberg would be writers for Episodes VIII and IX)

No word yet on whether J.J. Abrams will only be doing Episode VII or whether he’ll be doing all three.
