Suvudu has an interview with Millennium Falcon Owner’s Workshop Manual author Ryder Windham today. The interview covers Windham’s work with both novels and reference books, the differences between the two, and of course the Millennium Falcon.
What did your collaboration with Haynes involve? How did they assist you in writing the book?
I worked very closely with Haynes editor Derek Smith, and also the artists Chris Reiff and Chris Trevas. I wrote a rough outline with proposed topics for each spread, and then Chris and Chris added more stuff, and then we shuffled things around until we filled 125 pages of material, including the inside back cover. All involved can correct me or beat me up if I’m wrong, but I think it was my idea to present other ships in the YT-series to help illustrate the evolution of the YT-1300. If I had a question about some part of the Falcon and I couldn’t find information in a reference book, Chris and Chris either sent me the info or gave me their own suggestions for how I might write certain bits. The project was very collaborative.

Book Review: ‘The Haynes Millennium Falcon Owner’s Workshop Manual’

My dad was always the kind of person who wanted to try fixing something first before resorting to outside help. This meant that every time he bought a vehicle over the years, part of the process would include heading to the Shucks Auto near our old home to buy a Haynes repair manual. First one I can remember him getting was for his beat-up Volkswagon Rabbit pickup truck, and did he ever need the manual for that lemon. Some of my fondest memories growing up was sitting on the front porch while he tore into that unreliable engine bay to fix the latest leak or blown gasket. I remember very distinctly that he’d have the old, beat-up, oil-stained Haynes manual sitting atop the engine, waiting for him to open it up to reference the exact issue he was working on.
A little over a month ago, the great people at Del Rey sent me an advance copy of a book that took me back in time to those days watching my dad fix his truck: The Haynes Millennium Falcon Owner’s Workshop Manual by Ryder Windham, Chris Reiff, and Chris Trevas.

This Haynes Manual traces the model history of the Corellian Engineering Corporation’s YT series of spaceships and the development of the YT-1300 model line before focusing on the Millennium Falcon, itself a modified YT-1300. Onboard systems, controls, and their operation are described in detail and supported by a host of photographs, line art, floor plans, exploded diagrams, and stunning computer-generated artwork, all newly created by acknowledged Falcon experts Chris Reiff and Chris Trevas. Text is by Ryder Windham, author of more than fifty Star Wars books.
Covering operational history, piloting, propulsion, weapons, engineering systems, sensors, and crew facilities, this is the most thorough technical guide to the Millennium Falcon available.

-Millennium Falcon operational history (previous owners and modifications)
-Engineering systems and sensors
-Crew facilities: quarters, medical bay, and recreation.

-Flight notes: practical and tactical information on flying the Millennium Falcon.
It’s worth noting that this is just a preliminary cover. Regardless it’s pretty cool looking and it makes you wonder if we might see more.
