TheForce.Net has an interview with Mike Mayhew, the artist behind Dark Horse Comics eight issue mini-series The Star Wars.

You’re responsible for the majority of the work that goes into designing the entirety of this alternate Star Wars galaxy. What does that process look like?

Well, that was something that was so daunting. And, the book was basically solicited before I came on, so any “extra” time I took to take the care and attention one would imagine that this project might need from a design standpoint was not a luxury. Pages were needed from day one. So, in essence, I needed to design everything, while doing penciling and inking chores on a monthly book. It would be like George designing Star Wars while he filmed it with the actors.

To make matters worse, I came on the book and agreed to a schedule, under the instructions that an “army” of artists was designing everything for me! This fell flat quickly for several reasons, some beyond anyone’s control, and because I actually wanted to control the design process, mainly so I wasn’t “stuck” drawing something that was difficult for me.

New Interview with Mike Mayhew on ‘The Star Wars’

Newsarama has a new interview with The Star Wars artist Mike Mayhew. The Star Wars #1 hits stores tomorrow, so be sure to check it out.

You’ve called this the Apocalypse Now version of Star Wars in terms of its dark nature. How is it so different, thematically?

Mike Mayhew: Thematically, it’s probably similar; a group of disparate characters come together to fight for freedom against an evil empire. The execution is way different and darker. There is much more emotion, action, and violence. It’s on par with The Searchers or Seven Samurai. Almost all of The Star Wars #3 feels like a “spaghetti western” with lazerswords. This isn’t a children’s fantasy that softens danger and is mindful of toy licenses. This is a journey into the heart of darkness, with Jedi warriors who slice and dice their way through everything the Empire can throw at them. I’m wrapping up The Star Wars #4, and half way through this “movie” General Luke is approaching double digits for kills. Overall there is more loss, tragedy, and passion in these characters driven by higher stakes consequences as a result of the war with the Empire. This is the draft that I bet John Milius would have loved!

Bleeding Cool has posted part three of their interview with The Star Wars artist Mike Mayhew.

Moving on to the ships, my first question has to be why exactly is there a guy on the wing of the Aquilae Fighter? Was that ever called the Shatner seat?

Mike Mayhew: Well, the Aquilaen Fighter was designed by and modeled for me by artist Sean Cooke. I think the concept was always that the pilots in the rough draft always had some co-pilot or wingman on board, a role that was later changed to an R2 unit. The rough draft describes him in a bubble. I figure he operates the main laser turret and other armaments. I think Sean did a great job of creating a similar, yet very different ship for our story.

Click here to read the full interview. As much as I love hearing Mike talk about spaceships and the cool McQuarrie art they’re looking at for the project, I think my biggest fanboy moment would be his mention of using Robert Shaw as a likeness for Vader. Jaws plus Star Wars is a win-win.

Lot of The Star Wars news coming out today. PREVIEWSworld has an interview with The Star Wars‘ writer, J.W. Rinzler and artist, Mike Mayhew. It also has a log of new artwork including looks at the Death Star, new starfighters and much more.

“The all-new characters add to the story and do things that are unexpected.  For instance, a new rebel agent Klieg Whitsun, teams up with General Luke and Annikin and he is key to their mission.  Also, a new villain, one of the Sith 100, has some major character development and does something a villain has never done in a Star Wars film!” -Mike Mayhew

Mike Mayhew on ‘The Star Wars’

Comic artist Mike Mayhew made some interesting comments on Twitter regarding the new upcoming series The Star Wars.

Mike Mayhew: “pulling out my Hal Foster PRINCE VALIANT Fantagraphics volumes as I layout the 1st scenes of THE STAR WARS #3.  Maybe my fave comics ever.”

Mike Mayhew: “Each panel, on 8-9 panel pages, gives more spectacle & scope than any modern double page spread.”

Mike Mayhew: “THE STAR WARS is going to pack a lot of story on every page. The story is dense proven in the fact that stuff from all 6 movies are in it!”

In addition to that, Mike has also posted some of the uncolored artwork for The Star Wars #1 . You can check out the comparisons between the black and white pages to the colored pages below.

To kick things off, how about some reassuring news regarding Dark Horse Comics and Star Wars. According to Bleeding Cool, Star Wars will be with Dark Horse Comics for the entirety of 2014.

They will continue to make Darth Vader miniseries, Star Wars Legacy will remain an ongoing book and will alternate between artists every six issues and the mini-series based on George Lucas’ original drafts, The Star Wars, will have a radically different logo to differentiate it.

Dark Horse to Adapt Lucas’s Original Concepts

darkhorse_logo_1_Dark Horse announced at WonderCon that they will be producing an 8 issue series based on George Lucas’s original Star Wars concepts.  The comic will be titled The Star Wars (not to be confused with the Brian Wood’s series, Star Wars).  The comic will feature General Anakin Starkiller — not a Sith – as well as and old general, Luke Skywalker.

Jonathan Rinzler will write and Mike Mayhew will be the artist.

George Lucas’s original-draft screenplay for The Star Wars to be adapted by J. W. Rinzler and Mike Mayhew!

APRIL 1, MILWAUKIE, OR–It’s no April Fools’ prank! Dark Horse is honored to announce a dream project: working with J.W. Rinzler, executive editor at LucasBooks, and artist Mike Mayhew (Avengers) to adapt the rough-draft original screenplay which spawned the biggest franchise in film history!

Three years before his 1977 film, George Lucas put down on paper his first story set in a galaxy far, far away—a tale of fantastic adventures, daring escapes, “lazer swords,” romance, and monsters. A story of Jedi Annikin Starkiller and General Luke Skywalker, an alien named Han Solo, and evil Sith Knights. The screenplay was titled The Star Wars!

“I’m not sure where I first read about The Star Wars—it was years and years ago—but the idea of Luke Skywalker being an older Jedi General, and Han Solo being a six-foot-tall lizard, turned my Star Wars fan brain on its side,” said longtime Star Wars editor Randy Stradley. “I always assumed this would be one of those stories that would be ‘lost to history,’ so getting to work on bringing it to life is kinda like a dream come true.”

“While researching in the Lucasfilm Archives I’ve found many treasures—but one which truly astounded me was George’s rough draft for The Star Wars. His first complete imaginings were hallucinating to read—mind blowing,” said writer J.W. Rinzler. “While working with George on another book project, I once asked if we could adapt his rough draft. He was hesitant. Years later, with Dark Horse’s invaluable help, we showed him a few drawn and colored pages of what it might look like. He gave us the okay.”

Originally conceived in 1974, The Star Wars has been the subject of rumor and legend in the fan community throughout the history of the galaxy far, far away. Now, Lucas has seen fit to grant Dark Horse the right to adapt this fabled story into an eight-issue comic series launching in September!
