There are many characters in the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and one of the most unique is a flying pig named Voort ‘Piggy’ saBinring. Piggy has been many things: an Imperial, scientific test subject; an elite commando, starfighter pilot; a friend and a hero. But it all started in Aaron Allston’s novel Wraith Squadron. Suvudu Fifty Page Friday: Mercy Kill

As a pre-release treat, Suvudu has dedicated this Fifty Page Friday to Aaron Allston’s Mercy Kill.  After a 13 year absence from the X-wing series, Aaron had this to say about adding an addition to the popular X-wing series.

“Imagine attending your first family reunion in 13 years — or maybe it’s 37 years, you’re bad with numbers. You’re very anxious to attend, but the prospect of getting to reacquaint yourself with long-lost relatives, to get to know their kids, to catch up on their lives, just to remember all their names, is daunting.

That’s sort of what it was like to write the opening chapters of X-Wing: Mercy Kill. Most of the novel is set 37 years after the last time Wraith Squadron was the genuine center of action of a book, making me the person in charge of introductions at that long-awaited family reunion.

I chose to kick things off with a caper set only six years after the events of X-Wing: Solo Command — at nearly the same time X-Wing: Starfighters of Adumar was taking place, in fact. The first chapter would serve to reacquaint longtime readers with and to introduce new readers to the original Wraiths, plus demonstrate their methods. Then I could jump forward to the “modern,” post-Fate of the Jedi era to bring original and new Wraiths together, to showcase the new members of the unit, and to reveal the new challenges they face. Continuity, discontinuity, family, conflict, all at once.

Writing it was difficult, challenging, and fun.

Did everyone remember to bring a covered dish to pass? Good. Here we go…”

Star Wars Books has posted another mini-excerpt from Aaron Allston’s Mercy Kill which will be out next Tuesday.

“Besides . . .” Myri suddenly sounded cheerful. “Did you hear what Trey said? You’re going to Si’klaata Cluster. That’s Hutt space. I can stay here, wallow in the mud, and eat worms all day, and I’ll still be in a cleaner, nicer place than you two will.”

You can find the previous excerpts here: mini-excerpt #1, #2, #3,#4, #5, the bonus excerpt, the audio excerpt, and the Random House excerpts.

Star Wars Books has posted a mini-excerpt from Aaron Allston’s Mercy Kill.

The trooper caught up with Myri after three steps, seized her arm, and swung her around to slam her into the side of a building. She couldn’t see his features in the deep shadow, but his voice was suddenly full of anger. He jabbed a forefinger at her. “You do not insult the—”

She put one hand on the back of his and seized his index finger with her other hand. She bent his finger up, a sudden, all-out effort, and bones snapped.

He started to look at his stricken hand, started to make a pained noise, but she immediately drew her blaster, thumbed its side switch to make sure it was still set on stun, and fired into his stomach. The stun bolt briefly illuminated the alley and his shocked expression. Then he fell.

She looked down at him and holstered her weapon. “Sorry, Army. My heart belongs to Starfighter Command.” Then she stepped over him and returned to the street.

Star Wars Insider #135 splashes the cover with some iconic characters as it kicks off a look back at 30 years of videogames. From Atari to The Old Republic, there’s quite a  collection of highlights. Beyond gaming, there’s an interview with The Clone Wars line producer Athena Portillo. Tricia Barr (FANgirl Blog) also has the honor of interview author Aaron Allston on his upcoming novel X-Wing: Mercy Kill. Aaron talks about Piggy, the new Yuuzhan Vong member of Wraith Squadron, and how he uses of humor in his books. I really liked the X-Wing art they used to illustrate the interview (which also includes a brief history of the X-Wing series). While the images aren’t new, they still look awesome. Star Wars Books has posted a mini-excerpt from Aaron Allston’s Mercy Kill with another dose of Myri.

“Myri, I thought you were making your living gambling. Nice and safe on the Errant Venture. Making a fortune, from what I heard.”

She nodded, her attention on her rifle.

“So? Why this?”

She smiled. “You must be so proud.”

“What? Of whom?”

“That’s what they tell me. Mostly about Daddy. ‘Wedge Antilles’s daughter? You must be so proud.’ And I am. Some people know about Mom’s career. ‘You must be so proud.’ And I am. Some people know about my sister’s record in the last war. ‘You must be so proud.’ Yes, yes, I am. But maybe it’s time for someone to be proud of what I do. Maybe even me.”

You can find the previous excerpts here: mini-excerpt #1, #2, #3, the bonus excerpt, and the audio excerpt.
