“Writing Like It’s 1999”

Former Star Wars author Kristine Kathryn Rusch wrote a very thorough and intelligent article that touched on a lot of things, but most importantly how the publishing industry has changed and how writers no longer have to be at the mercy of large publishing houses. In fact, Kristine actually shows just how easy it is for a writer to be their own publisher. Her ideas don’t just make sense, they actually make the existing publishing system seem prehistoric. The title of her article, “Writing Like It’s 1999” hints that most writers are still doing business like they did over 10 years ago. What they don’t realize is that the world has changed. Writers no longer have to waste their money on publishers. Today writer’s can cut out the middleman and reap the rewards for themselves.

Folks, all of the things you learned about agents, editors, and book publishers used to be true.

Ten years ago, you needed an agent to open the doors for you in traditional publishing.

Ten years ago, your editor—who loved books (and still loves books)—could go to bat for you within the publishing house and actually win the fight, protecting you, her author.

Ten years ago, traditional publishing—while not a friendly industry (I don’t think there are any)—did not screw its artists the way that the music industry and Hollywood did.

Ten years ago.

Not any more. -Kristine Kathryn Rusch, “Writing Like It’s 1999”

I highly recommend reading the article, even if you aren’t a writer and have no aspirations to become one. It’s a very insightful look into the industry and how it’s changing. As a reader, it’s nice to have an idea of what’s going on in the world around us. Plus the article is not a dry, fact ridden piece with boring stats. Kristine includes lots of bits and pieces that keep it entertaining and engaging. Trust me, it’s worth reading. And if you are a professional writer, you might just find some helpful advice that could save your career.
