Our Celebration Anaheim Interview with John Jackson Miller

While at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim, we had the chance to interview Star Wars author John Jackson Miller. We talked about not just Star Wars, but also his recent work with Star Trek and his work in his original sci-fi setting Overdraft.
This may be taboo but I’d like to ask you first about your latest novel Star Trek: The Next Generation: Takedown. What kind of prep work did you have to do for this novel?
Well I certainly needed to be aware of where the characters were relative to the other novels that Pocket Books had out. I also needed to get some sense of the specs of Enterprise relative to Aventine, which is the ship that they’re chasing throughout the book. I also got out my copy of Star Trek Star Charts and got a good idea of where all of the locations were in my story. So basically ever place that they go is some place they could reasonably get to.
Character voices can be hard to capture, but Senator Bretorious really leaps off of the page. How did he come about?
Well I think the notion was that I wanted to show that for a Romulan it was…it’s common for Romulans to have to try to claw over each other to become at the top level of their society. With Bretorious I wanted to show someone who had very limited prospects who had advanced as far as he was going to go and was on the way down. I wanted to show particularly, as the events of the story unfold, what happens when somebody of his limited abilities is put into the position that the opportunities of the book provide him. It’s difficult to get too much into this book without revealing some of the secrets, but certainly pitting Riker against Picard, they’re certain friends, but they’re on opposite sides of the situation. Riker, now being an admiral in the book chronology, provides some interesting story opportunities. Then of course pitting Riker against Bretorious, we got to see their two different personalities clashing there, too. I had a lot of fun with the book and it was very well received. All Wings Report In Interviews John Jackson Miller

All Wings Report In, the official podcast of the Rebel Legion, has a really nice interview with author John Jackson Miller. John was recently inducted into the Rebel Legion at San Diego Comic Con 2013, and he jokes around about joining the Mandalorian Mercs next for a trifecta. He talks about recruiting a Tusken Raider at SDCC to threaten con goers, a wild traffic jam he and Michael S. Stackpole witnessed involving a train, a fire truck, cops and a cosplayer with wings. John also talks about how he ended up working for Dark Horse Comics, how Knights of the Old Republic came about, when KOTOR will come back, tabletop gaming, developing the Lost Tribe of the Sith, how art can sometimes inspire the story, the origin of Kenobi and how it got put off. Like other authors recently, John emphasized that future Star Wars projects are on a wait and see basis, but he is doing stuff other than Star Wars (Simpsons, Conan, Star Trek, Overdraft: The Orion Offensive). The interview covers a whole lot more, and combined with the good audio quality, this is definitely one worth checking out.

The big news this was the announcement of a new Star Wars book in The Jedi Path/The Book of Sith line that will focus on the bounty hunters. Called The Bounty Hunter Code: From the File of Boba Fett, this deluxe edition comes in the shape of a briefcase, includes extra goodies and covers info on bounty hunting with notes from the pros like Boba, Dengar, Bossk and more. Idle Hands posted a really nice write up with lots of pictures, plus Amazon has it up for pre-order. Unlike the previous books in this series, Daniel Wallace will be joined by two other authors: Ryder Windham and Jason Fry. The book is certainly in good hands.
LucasBooks editor Jen Heddle has also been tweeting a lot of lit news lately. She’s been reading the manuscripts for Maul: Lockdown by Joe Schreiber and The Star Wars by J.W. Rinzler. Some fun notes about The Star Wars: there’s a pilot character called Mace and Leia has a brother named Windy. Definitely going to be an interesting read. Continue Reading Around the Web…
