Kinect Star Wars Update

So what happened to Kinect Star Wars? Back in August, Microsoft announced that the game would be postponed from it’s original release date of December 31, 2011 to “beyond holiday 2011.” Being Christmas, some fans might have gotten some gift cards and could be eager to get an idea of just how long they’ll have to wait. The general forecast right now looks to be June 2012. Both Walmart and Target have a release date of June 1, 2012 for Kinect Star Wars currently listed on their websites. Amazon also has that release date, but for the Kinect Star Wars console bundle. Walmart has their bundle with a July 1st release. However, not all of the stores are on the same page with the date. Kmart is the most optimistic of all with a February 7, 2012 release.

Regardless of when the game does come out, if you’re planning on getting the bundle (which includes Star Wars Kinect, Kinect Adventures, the R2-D2 themed Xbox 360 console, the C-3PO themed wireless remote controller, Kinect sensor, wired headset, and a 320GB hard drive) the price is going to run you $449.99 without discounts. If the release turns out to be in June, that should give you enough time to save up.

For weeks now the delay of Kinect: Star Wars has been known, but now it’s official:

Microsoft and LucasArts have elected to move the launch of Kinect Star Wars beyond holiday 2011 to ensure the full potential of this title is realized. This move applies to both the Kinect Star Wars stand-alone game and the Kinect Star Wars Limited Edition Console. We will communicate additional timing information at a later date. –Microsoft Spokesperson

As of yet there is no new release date for the game. It was originally slated for a December 31, 2011. The good news is that hopefully the delay will allow the developers to polish the game off and fix some of the issues that have been reported with early game previews.

Update: IGN has posted more details, skip to the bottom to see the run down.

I’ve always wanted to stomp around as a rancor and eat helpless individuals as they tried in vain to escape my massive. taloned claws…well Kinect Star Wars is going to make that a reality. According to Game Informer, Kinect Star Wars will feature several opportunities to roam around as a rancor with a limited amount of time to cause as much destruction as possible. You can pound the ground to knock down building and can grab people for a quick treat or a convenient smashball. There gameplay experience reports some issues with movement recognition, but they also mentioned promises of other species of rancors to be included in the game, including flying rancors.

Rancor smash!

E3 News: Kinect Star Wars: Update

Microsoft’s presentation of Kinect Star Wars at E3 showed off cab racing on Coruscant, velker racing through the skies of Bespin, flying ARC-170 starfighters in large space battles, and smashing battle droids with the Force and your lightsaber. The demo made the game seem scripted. It was hard to tell how much movement can be initiated by character and how much freedom (if any) there will be in the levels, but the graphics looked descent. Plus from the gameplay shown, the demo ended with a scene showing two Sith shrouded in shadow challenging the Jedi character and his Nautolan side kick. The level had a carbon freezing chamber ala Empire Strikes Back feel. Could it mean that the story for Kinect Star Wars is non-canon?

We will keep you updated as more news becomes available, but for now, how about some pics…
