In movie news this week, the 1988 film Willow was released in blu-ray for the first time. The film stars Warwick Davis and Val Kilmer, was directed by Ron Howard, and based on a story by George Lucas. If you look closely while watching the film, you might also spot Kenny Baker (R2-D2) as a Nelwyn musician.

Kick-Ass 2 has a red band trailer out now courtesy of MTV. The release date is now set for August 16th.

Star Trek fans can check out the second trailer for Star Trek: Into the Darkness. Continue Reading Around the Web…

The Weekly Crisis Interviews John Ostrander

The Weekly Crisis posted an interview with comic writer John Ostrander. The interview covers the Agent of the Empire series, Dawn of the Jedi, Legacy and more. I particularly liked John’s comments about forcesabers.

“For example, it was a given that the hyperspace drive that later ships – such as the Millennium Falcon – used originated with the Rakatan hyperdrive that used the Force as a power source. Extrapolating from that, we asked how lightsabers were developed and came up with Rakatan “forcesabers” which were forerunners in terms of the overall technology but used the Force itself as a power source. We thought that since a forcesaber would be an aggressive weapon, it would pull on the dark side as its power source. All of which seemed to make sense to LFL as well as us.” -John Ostrander

In case you missed this little piece of news (like I did), Tim Lebbon’s upcoming Dawn of the Jedi novel Into the Void will include an original Dawn of the Jedi short story by John Ostrander, plus a full color excerpt from Dawn of the Jedi comic. This will be very similar to the Knight Errant novel which also included a full color comic excerpt.

John Ostrander Weighs in on the Disney Deal

John Ostrander, the writer of some of the most popular Star Wars comics such as Dark Horse: Legacy and Dawn of the Jedi, posted a column about the LFL sale over on Comix Mix today.  Among other things, John had this to say:

There has been, of course, a cacophony of reaction all over the ‘net. Them underground tubes have been humming. Some praise, some wails of distress, some outraged howls of betrayal. Among Star Wars fans there has been a lot of speculation of what Episode VII would be like. Which part of the Extended Universe (EU) would be adapted? The Thrawn Trilogy? The New Jedi Order? Legacy?

The answer: none of the above. Official response has been that it would be “an original story.” Massive disappointment among the EU faithful and fears that the new Episode VII will make hash of the post Episode VI EU. I fully expect the new film to respect EU continuity as much as George Lucas did which was – not at all.

The reason why? If you’re not a EU fan, how many of those possibilities that I named up above made any sense to you? I’m guessing “none of the above.” The fans are important but there’s not enough of them. The first new Star Wars movie in decades? A sequel, not a prequel? Disney and Lucasfilm are going to be looking for Avengers type numbers and that means it has to be accessible to the general public. Heck, they’ll want it to be accessible to those who haven’t watched a Star Wars film ever. That’s not unreasonable. That’s why Disney made the purchase in the first place.

You can read the entire column on Comix Mix, and, while John makes it clear he’s not speaking in any official capacity,  it’s worth the read.

J K Rowling: for floating the idea that she’d like to do a director’s cut on two of her Harry Potter books.

“There were a couple of the Potters and I definitely knew that they needed another year,” Rowling told the BBC arts editor Will Compertz. Her last Potter novel, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, came out in 2007.  “I had to write on the run and there were times when it was really tough.  “And I read them, and I think ‘Oh God, maybe I’ll go back and do a director’s cut,’ I don’t know.  There were a couple of the Potters and I definitely knew that they needed another year.”

You can catch a video of J K Rowling on BBC News.
