Review: Darth Vader and Son 2022 Wall Calendar

I’ve never reviewed a calendar before, so here goes. Chronicle Books sent me a 2022 calendar featuring the beautiful artwork of Darth Vader and his kids by the talented Jeffrey Brown. If you’re a fan of the Darth Vader and Son books, this is a great calendar option for next year.
Each month features a large size print of Jeffrey Brown’s Star Wars artwork. They’re great reproductions as each of them are pieces that have appeared in his Star Wars books. The calendar is done on nice thick paper. Each month is easy to read and features all the holidays and then some.
Overall, it’s a nice calendar and it looks great hanging on the wall. Unlike a lot of calendars, this one will be perfect for Star Wars fans, especially if you have kids. So if you need a last minute gift, or you just need to pick up a calendar for the new year, this one is a perfect option. Five out of five.

‘Rey and Pals’ Interview with Jeffrey Brown

Tomorrow, Jeffrey Brown’s new book Rey and Pals will be out from Chronicle Books and we had the opportunity to ask him a few questions. Enjoy!
What’s your creative process like? For example, do you start with a list of ideas for the jokes, or do you start with doodles or thumbnail sketches to develop the ideas.
I usually start with the ideas – for Rey and Pals, I came up with almost 200 initial ideas! Sometimes these start with a quote from one of the films and I need to figure out a situation to use it, or I might want to make a joke about a real life situation and figure out what scene from the film I could use to make the joke. Other times there’s something from the films I want to draw – like Maz’s castle with its menagerie of aliens – and I need to figure out a joke that might fit with it. These ideas are all drawn as tiny thumbnail sketches, which I then work with my editors at Chronicle and Lucasfilm to refine and flesh out before I start final artwork. Darth Vader & Son and Vader’s Little Princess Deluxe Box Set is out today from Chronicle Books.
Jeffrey Brown’s beloved reimagination of the Star Wars universe featuring Darth Vader as a devoted dad to young Luke and Leia has charmed and captivated fans of all ages, and the books have become galactic bestsellers and classics in their own right.
This deluxe gift box set reproduces the first two books in the series (Darth Vader & Son and Vader’s Little Princess) in a large format that showcases Brown’s funny, colorful work (and doubles as ‘storybook size’ for those sharing the books with young Jedis).
The slipcase edition also includes two unique, 4-color frameable art prints created just for this set, as well as custom artwork for the slipcase box.
Note this one is 8″ x 8″ in comparison to the normal 6-1/2″ x 6-1/2″ format of the previous versions.

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Bombad Radio: Star Wars Celebration: Revenge of the Sith 3D episode is hosted by Jeremiah and Jason as Jason talks about seeing Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith in 3D at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim. He compares the 3D quality of all three prequel films, summarizes Dennis Muren’s comments on doing the 3D effects for ROTS, and they talk about the screenings in general. Kind of a neat inside look since I haven’t seen any of the films in 3D. Interesting to hear how far ROTS has come with the latest 3D effects.
Brews and Blasters: Episode #20 features special guest Riley Blanton (Star Wars Report) and is hosted by Joe Tavano. The episode starts out with a little coffee discussion before the meander into some Star Wars and then dig into the Vanity Fair The Force Awakens article. At the end, they do a quick review of Age of Ultron and talk about Whedon’s rift with Marvel. It’s a very casual episode and there are some technical difficulties, but you might want to check it out.
Cloud City Casino: Episode 002 features guest Mark Hurliman as they talk about Celebration. Though, to be honest, it’s mostly Mark talking. Michael gives Mark plenty of room to cover his trip to Disneyland and Celebration with the family, sharing the trial and tribulations, as well as the awesome moments. It’s a fun episode with good audio quality and a great guest making it worth checking out. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…

Coffee With Kenobi: Freddie Prinze Jr. Interview features several podcasts as they interviewed Freddie at Star Wars Celebration Anaheim. It’s a short interview, but Freddie covered some very intriguing topics from elaborating on Hera and Kanan’s relationship to giving out some details on Kanan and Rex’s relationship. He even gives a surprising yet compelling defense of risque fan art. Definitely worth a listen. The audio starts out a little hard to hear but picks up pretty quickly.
Coffee Chat with Jim Hill and Len Testa is a good one. In this episode Len and Jim dig in deep with some background and history on Disney and their relationship with Star Wars which is an intriguing and entertaining discussion. They talk about the plans Disney has for Star Wars attractions, and even touch on some of the differences between Disneyland and Disney World.
Dead Talks: Episode #37 discusses the episode “Try” with another excellent breakdown of the show and some great character analyzation. While it may be a long wait for next season, there’s plenty of time to go back and catch up on the podcast. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…

Book News
- Cover reveal for Jeffrey Brown’s next Star Wars book The Phantom Bully.
Award-winning author/illustrator Jeffrey Brown returns for the third installation of the NEW YORK TIMES bestselling series Star Wars: Jedi Academy!
It’s hard to believe this is Roan’s last year at Jedi Academy. He’s been busier than ever learning to fly (and wash) starships, swimming in the Lake Country on Naboo, studying for the Jedi obstacle course exam, and tracking down dozens of vorpak clones — don’t ask. But now, someone is setting him up to get in trouble with everyone at school, including Yoda. If he doesn’t find out who it is, and fast, he may get kicked out of school! Why can’t middle school just be easy. . .
This incredible, original story captures all of the humor, awkwardness, fun, and frustrations of middle school — all told through one boy’s comics, journal entries, letters, sketches, e-mails, and more.

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Bombad Radio: Episode 161 starts off with an unboxing of Dungeons & Dragons Next, flows into a con report of SDCC 2014, then jumps into the main feature: an interview with actor Adam Lazarre-White who voiced Jacob in the Mass Effect series. Adam talks about he got into acting, his early career in soap opera, moving into voice acting, the differences between roles, identifying scenes, being the character, and even basing Jacob on Han Solo. Kind of a neat interview and worth listening to if you’re a Mass Effect fan or interesting in acting and voice acting.
Coffee with Kenobi: Episode #22 includes some feedback on the Star Wars Rebels trailer out of SDCC 2014, some comments on the X-wing revealed in the Force for Change video, and the usual “Expresso Shot” from the Bearded Trivia hitting film news including Jurassic World. Consetta Parker stops by to talk about the upcoming Rancho Obi-Wan Gala, and they interview author Ian Doescher. Ian talks about the William Shakespeare Star Wars books, finding the right voices for the characters, and even shares what he’s working on next. Lot of goodness packed into this one episode, so be sure to check it out.
“Special Edition: Coffee with Kenobi Discusses SDCC 2014” includes their thoughts on the Star Wars Rebels preview clips and the character of the Inquisitor. Then they with special guest Jeff McGee (Assembly of Geeks) about SDCC and collectibles. Jeff’s always a fun guy to listen to and Star Wars Rebels and SDCC make good discussion topics. Another good one to add to your playlist.
