Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review. It’s a shorter one as I’m catching up from my vacation last week, but we’ll be back in the swing of things next week.
80’s Reboot Overdrive Podcast: James Kahn Interview is a good one to listen to. James has been making the rounds lately with podcast interviews, and this one, while covering some familiar ground, also breaks into some new territory. It’s a good interview with good hosts, excellent sound quality and a lot of Goonies focus.
Fangirls Going Rogue: Episode 20 includes news highlights, Star Wars Weekends coverage with audio clips and interviews with Steve Blum and Daniel Logan, a special discussion on their ten favorite Star Wars musical moments, and a character discussion on Barriss Offee. Great episode.
Full of Sith: Episode CXIX is hosted by Mike and Bryan with special guest Holly Frey as they talk about legendary actor Christopher Lee who recently passed away. They cover a little bit of everything, from his role in Star Wars, to Lord of the Rings and his Hammer Films work. Entertaining as always, this is a good one to check out.
RebelForce Radio: Episode 6.19.2015 has Star Wars Weekends coverage with Jimmy Mac and Steve Glosson as they talk with James Arnold Taylor, Ashley Eckstein, Taylor Gray and Ray Park, do the RebelForce Radio listener meetup, recount their Star Tours and Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular experiences and more. Definitely a fun episode to listen to.
Episode 6.12.2015 they cover some Star Wars book release dates, Jimmy discusses why he stopped reading Heir to the Jedi, they play Steve Glosson’s great Star Wars parody song of Nickleback’s “Rockstar”, they cover the upcoming mobile game Star Wars Uprising, the Han Solo bombshell from Marvel, and movie rumors. Lots of stuff packed into this one.
Skywalking Through Neverland: Episode 82 features guest Kevin Reitzel for Star Wars Weekends #3 coverage then shifts to Christopher Lee highlights, history and audio clips. As a big fan of Christopher Lee, I really enjoyed this episode. From his early career to his upcoming, unreleased work, they cover it all. Highly recommend it, and it goes great with the Full of Sith Christopher Lee episode, so be sure to double up.

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Assembly of Geeks: Age of Ultron Declassified is their discussion of the film. They touch on the characters, the things they did and didn’t like, and Joss Whedon’s role in it all. It’s a fun discussion, but it’s not the only topic in this show. They also cover tv show renewals and cancellations, Universal doing a Nintendo theme park, Captain America: Civil War, and Legends of Tomorrow. Great episode overall.
Comic Book Noob: Episode 1 covers the comic characters Ultron and the Vision. Hosted by Scott Murray (Assembly of Geeks), Matt Moore and Regina Davis, they dig into the comic characters discussing their origins, their character arcs, the differences with the movie portrayals of the characters, as well as the similarities. It’s an excellent discussion and very timely, perfect for anyone who has seen Age of Ultron and would like to know more about the comic book characters of Ultron and the Vision.
Fly Casual: Episode 38 is a news and toy report episode. They start off with a Flash/DC/Marvel discussion, then dive into the Vanity Fair Star Wars article and pictures. They talk about Josh Trank leaving Star Wars, Disney Infinity 3.0, then head into toy news with Hot Wheels mini-ships. Fun episode with their typical entertaining discussion. I rather enjoyed their feedback on Disney Infinity as I haven’t played any of the iterations of that game. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…

Travis Heermann Interview with James Kahn

Travis Heermann posted an interesting interview with author James Kahn. For Star Wars fans, James Kahn is the author of the Return of the Jedi novelization. Yet in his 30 year career, he has covered a lot of ground, most of which the interview touches upon. From his brush with life as a mountain man, to his work with films, there’s a wide array of questions and answers that shed light on things I knew nothing about. My favorite reply was regarding E.T.
TH: What is the most memorable moment (good, bad, or other) you have had in your life as an artist?
JK: Probably when Kathleen Kennedy called the ER where I was working and asked if anybody there could help her figure out how to resuscitate an alien. Several of us went down to the set of E.T.[: the Extraterrestrial], wrote the med tech dialogue and donned hazmat suits in the E.T. death scene, which led to me getting the assignment to novelize Poltergeist. I’d call that first phone call a memorable moment.
Click here to read the full interview. According to James, his new re-release of World Enough, And Time should have a special sale going on today via Amazon, though as of this posting it was still listed as $7.99 for the eBook version.

Happy Birthday, James Kahn

KHAN! Oh, wait, not that Khan…James Kahn, the author of the novelization of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi. Today we wish James a very happy birthday. Although he may only have written one book for the Star Wars franchise, he was one of the first.
Born in Chicago, IL, James Kahn attended the University of Chicago and studied in emergency medicine. He completed his studies at UCLA, while also continuing his hobby as a writer. While working at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, CA he wrote a series of sci-fi and medical thrillers. He later became a friend to Judy Lynn Del Rey, the wife of Lester Del Rey, the man behind Del Rey Books.
His experience in the ER and his science-fiction career brought into a rare opportunity to work in the film E.T. He helped write the medical dialog in the film and was in the scene where the doctors are trying to bring E.T. back to life. He showed Steven Speilberg his books World Enough and Time; Time’s Dark Laughter which got him a deal to do the novelization for Poltergeist.
From there he did several more novelizations for film such as Return of the Jedi, The Goonies, Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and Poltergeist II. Later he branched off into writing for television with shows like St. Elsewhere and E/R. He stuck with TV and wrote for a lot of various shows, from Xena to Star Trek. However, in recent years he has turned to writing music.
Regardless, we wish him a happy birthday and thank him for his contribution to Star Wars.
