The Robot Apocalypse – Phase 1 – Robonaut 2
August 23, 2011 at 12:28 pm | Posted in Regular Feature, Science News | Leave a commentTags: International Space station, ISS, nasa, space shuttle
Greetings Dear Readers. Today for Science Tuesday on Roqoo Depot it is my awkwardly creepy distinction to inform you that NASA has fired up Robonaut 2, the first humanoid robot to get a mission in space.
This creepy fellow goes by the nickname (it hurts my soul to tell you this) R2. While it seems clear to the casual observer that this abomination of nature is one of the early steps toward a post apocalyptic future dominated by Cylon overlords, I thought we might get to know this remorseless monst er… marvel of modern technology as it is likely our descendants may well be of some use to Robonauts descendants as… I don’t know, human batteries or maybe breeding stock of some sort. Hmm… Anyway… Continue Reading The Robot Apocalypse – Phase 1 – Robonaut 2…
Space Shuttle Atlantis Blasts Off Into History

Good morning Earth. As I write this on Saturday morning, July 9TH 2011 I sit here once again astounded at the level of human achievement in my lifetime. I have wondered at what point those wonderful stories we read about a galaxy far far away, or a television show in which we travel through stargates to other worlds, would stop being science fiction and just become fiction. Just stories of people doing things in an environment which might be very real. In places where the science is secondary to the story.

Smile Earth – You’re On Candid Camera
June 28, 2011 at 5:00 am | Posted in Science News | Leave a commentTags: International Space station, ISS, UrtheCast
If only Alan Funt were alive to see this. This week for Science Tuesday I give you UrtheCast. By spring of 2012, the entirety of planet Earth will be available for viewing by a pair of cameras mounted to the International Space Station that has been described by it’s creators as “Google Earth on steroids.”
An article in Popular Science (www.popsci.com) by Rebecca Boyle states:
A Canadian company called UrtheCast (don’t ask us why it’s spelled this way) arranged a deal with Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, to bring two cameras to the International Space Station sometime later this year, where they will be mounted on the exterior. The video will be downlinked to Earth and broadcast online.
One camera will shoot in high-definition, with a frame rate of 3.25 fps, and another will broadcast in lower resolution, offering a three-color image. It will provide the first high-definition continuous video footage of Earth, according to Scott Larson, co-founder and president of UrtheCast, in a promotional video.
The system will work as a sort of mashup between Google Earth and YouTube, Larson says, connecting live footage with maps and other capabilities. Users will be able to pause, rewind and zoom, and view specific times and locations — so long as the ISS was passing overhead at the time.

For Science Thursday I give you a picture taken of The Automated Transfer Vehicle Johannes Kepler from the International Space Station that was posted on the ISS’s Facebook page this morning.
Good morning #FromSpace. The Automated Transfer Vehicle Johannes Kepler arrived at the International Space Station in February filled with tons of cargo, and left the Station Monday with lots of trash. Here it is just after departing.

Magnificent Photo of Space Shuttle Docked With ISS
June 7, 2011 at 5:21 pm | Posted in Regular Feature, Science News | 3 CommentsTags: International Space station, ISS, nasa, Spce Shuttle Endeavor
From the official NASA web site we find this stunning picture of the Space Shuttle Endeavor docked with the International Space Station. I already posted a science Tuesday blurb this morning but I think this photo deserves to make it a double shot Tuesday here at RD. You may now gasp at the splendor.

The International Space Station and the Docked Space Shuttle Endeavour This image of the International Space Station and the docked space shuttle Endeavour, flying at an altitude of approximately 220 miles, was taken by Expedition 27 crew member Paolo Nespoli from the Soyuz TMA-20 following its undocking on May 23, 2011 (USA time). It is the first-ever image of a space shuttle docked to the International Space Station. Onboard the Soyuz were Russian cosmonaut and Expedition 27 commander Dmitry Kondratyev; Nespoli, a European Space Agency astronaut; and NASA astronaut Cady Coleman. Coleman and Nespoli were both flight engineers. The three landed in Kazakhstan later that day, completing 159 days in space.

Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer Update
May 19, 2011 at 6:47 am | Posted in Miscellaneous, Regular Feature, Science News | Leave a commentTags: International Space station
As reported here last month on April 19TH, The Spaces Shuttle Endeavor (STS-134) has deployed the sensor array known as the Alpha Magnetic Spectometer in an attempt to directly observe anti-matter, dark matter and other exotic particles in space. The device was installed on the International Space Station around 6 AM EDT this morning using the Canadarm2 robotic arm.
You can watch the procedure by clicking the NASA TV link above. I will include a quote from the NASA press kit as a further expanation of what the device is and what it does but if you would like to read it in it’s entirety you can read it here starting on page 30.
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-2 (AMS) is a state-of-the-art particle physics detector to be delivered to the International Space Station. Using a large magnet to create a magnetic field that will bend the path of the charged cosmic particles already traveling through space, eight different instruments will provide information on those particles as they make their way through the magnet. Armed with that information, hundreds of scientists from 16 countries are hoping to determine what the universe is made of and how it began, as the AMS searches for clues on the origin of dark matter and the existence of antimatter and strangelets. And if that’s not enough, there is also the information it could provide on pulsars, blazers and gamma ray bursters and any number of phenomena that have yet to be named.
If dark matter exists, the AMS will be able to detect it. For instance, one candidate for the particles that are dark matter is the hypothetical, elementary neutralino particle. If neutralinos exist, their collision could create excesses of electrons and anti-electrons – positrons – that could then be detected by the AMS. The AMS could also detect antimatter and help answer another key question. Antimatter is made up of particles identical to those of regular matter, but with opposite electric and magnetic properties. The Big Bang theory assumes that there were equal amounts of matter and antimatter present when the universe began, in the complex form of helium anti-nuclei or heavier elements has never been found in nature. If it still exists, the AMS should be able to detect it – in the 10 years or more that the AMS will be in operation at the International Space Station, its detectors will see at least one (and possibly many) antihelium nucleus, if such a thing exists. If the detectors never see one, the AMS team will be able to affirm that they do not exist in the visible universe.
