Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

501stCast: September Episode includes the latest troop reports, a short clip with Mary Franklin, discussion of Star Wars Celebration Anaheim (mostly anxious anticipation as there isn’t too much news yet), a cool story about one trooper saving a person’s life, and even tips on how to throw a baseball as Darth Vader (or how not to, at least). Fun episode and the only place you’ll find news and coverage of the 501st Legion.

Assembly of Geeks:Reviewing Rebels & Remembering Henson” episode brings about a collection of Muppets topics as they cover their favorite Muppet songs and more. Tricia also talks about the Star Wars Rebels “Spark of Rebellion” screening, her feelings on the characters and the show overall. Good episode and worth a listen.

Bombad Radio: Episode 170 features their interview with Sean McKeever. Sean has worked on comics and videogames and is currently one of the writers for Star Wars: The Old Republic. He talks about what work he’s done on the game, how he ended up at Bioware, the differences between writing for comics and videogames, and his thoughts on all the different comic publishers he’s worked for. I hadn’t heard of Sean before but he turned out to be a really interesting guest. I liked his comments on comics and the comparisons to the video game industry, plus getting to hear what his contributions were (and are) for SWTOR.

Here is this week’s Around the Web news roundup of Star Wars and beyond.

Book News

  • Star Wars artist Grant Gould will be illustrating How to Draw Star Wars Rebels. No word on a release date yet.

Comic News

  • Randy Stradley gave an update on Star Wars trade paperback and omnibus collections over on the Dark Horse forums.

The second Dark Times Omnibus is indeed our final scheduled Omnibus. We will produce trades for all of the current series, but there is not enough time within our remaining license to publish Omnibuses. Dark Horse’s goal, obviously, must be to sell as much of our inventory before our final cut-off date.

There may — and I stress may be one more hardcover book before the end of the year. News about that when I have it.

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

Bombad Radio: Episode 110 is there Sam Witwer interview episode. I didn’t get a chance to listen to is last week, but I was a little surprised at how short it was. Still, it’s always cool to hear Sam talk Star Wars and I had no idea he did the voice for the Emperor in the Star Wars pinball games. Filling out the episode, the hosts talk about their favorite Star Wars characters, Bat Kid, and they have a segment covering Screen Rants what if article on who you would want to compete in the Hunger Games. Interesting to think about 16 year old Luke Skywalker going up against Buffy the Vampire Like, Hermione Granger from Harry Potter, and Hit-Girl. Fun discussion as always.

Coffee with Kenobi: Episode 8 features special guest Scott Murray from Assembly of Geeks as they cover Return of the Jedi. There’s some fun discussion as they explore why it’s Scott’s favorite Star Wars film, why some fan’s didn’t like it, and why it stands the test of time. This episode also has an interview with Del Rey editor Erich Schoeneweiss, interviewed by Tricia Barr. Erich talks a little about his involvement and work on the Star Wars books, including J.W. Rinzler’s The Making of Return of the Jedi, and drops a very intriguing tidbit about the current line of Star Wars fiction, “on the fiction side, there’s tons of stuff in the works”. It’s worth noting that he was not talking about Star Wars guides as he said right now, they don’t have anything going on.

The Sundering: Kemp, Denning, Salvatore and More!

One of the big announcements at Gen Con 2012 was the announcement of a new six book series that will change the world of the Forgotten Realms. The new series is being called The Sundering and will feature a different author for each book. The authors (in order) will include R. A. Salvatore (The Companions), Paul S. Kemp (The Godborn), Erin M. Evans (The Adversary), Richard Lee Byers (The Reaver), Troy Denning (The Sentinel), and Ed Greenwood (The Herald). Popular characters such as like Drizzt Do’Urden, Elminster, Drasek Riven, and Erevis cale will be appearing in the novels, as well as some new characters like Erevis Cale’s son, Vasen Cale.

For Denning fans this is big news since Troy hasn’t written a Forgotten Realms novel since The Sorcerer back in 2002. I’m really interested to see who the “old favorites” will be in The Sentinel.

As a huge Kemp fan, I’m glad that they revealed some new artwork of the characters which includes Erevis Cale, Drasek Riven, and Vasen Cale (Vasen Cale is crouching with the sword and shield, Erevis Cale is behind him bleeding shadowstuff, and Drasek Riven is second from the far right right). I’ve been looking forward to The Godborn and I can’t wait to see what Paul cooks up.

The Keynote Address also featured a cover gallery showcasing each book. You can watch the 2012 Gen Con Keynote Address below (book news starts around 34:00).
