The-hunger-games-logoI guess I’ll get the bad news out of the way first.  If you’re looking for the District 8 refugees, Bonnie and Twill, or the peacekeeper Darius in the movie, don’t bother.  They’re not in it.  I get it because books-to-movies are like that.  You just can’t fit everything in.  I’m not so sanguine about the change to Peeta (he can swim because no amputation), and director Francis Lawrence’s statement is why:

“The movie is very, very true to the book,” but  “We made some changes to Peeta’s narrative,” says Lawrence. “We manned him up a little. And by the way it didn’t take a lot, just little choices to make here and there. The story doesn’t really change, his relationship with Katniss doesn’t change, he’s just a different kind of character.” For instance, in the book, the Hunger Games kicks off and Peeta is paralyzed when the other all-star tributes dive into the water. “

I don’t know about the rest of The Hunger Games fans, but I pretty much want to see the same character from the trilogy, not, you know a different character.

Here’s the good news.  Coldplay is releasing the song, Atlas, their first original movie track.  It will be available on iTunes August 26.

Shark Week: Free Diving With Great Whites

Personally we think anyone who free dives with Great Whites has to be just a little bit nuts.  However, cameraman Andy Casagrande has done 13 Shark Week specials and lived to tell his tales — with all his limbs intact.

Andy has some great stories about his adventures with those scary fish, and some really good tips for dealing with them (if you’re as crazy adventuresome as he is) should you ever encounter a Great White up close and personal.

Great whites are easy. They’re built like pit bulls on steroids. They can bend their fins here and there, but their way of showing they’re angry is they open and close their mouth. So they just show you the jaws sign. They swim right at you and gape.

Stephen King Alert: Syfy is developing, as a long form project, King’s 1987 bestseller, The Eyes of the Dragon.  On board for the script are I, Robot’s Jeff Vintar and Battlestar Galactica’s Michael Taylor; executive producers are Taylor and Bill Haber.  The Eyes of the Dragon has something in common with King’s other works. Although it is set in a fictional world where a young prince (falsely accused of  and imprisoned for his father’s murder) must face a devious wizard, Eyes continues King’s practice of a character who’s appeared in his other works.  In this case, Flagg, who was in both the Dark Tower series and The Stand.

A Novel Approach to Novels:  How many times have you seen the question, “Hai, I’m new to the Star Wars Expanded Universe, and want to start reading the books.  Where do I start?”.  If you’re like us, you’ve heard it a lot.  Since there are about a bazillion Star Wars books (well, maybe not that many, but it seems like it), that’s a tall order and totally subjective to boot.  One reader’s soaring-to-new-heights novel is going to be another’s total dreck so how to advise?  Well, Tricia at Fangirl Cantina has come up with what we think is really a good idea.  You can check out her  where to start* article here, and why didn’t someone think of it sooner?

*Most frequent answer: Zim Zahn’s Thrawn Trilogy.  We have heard of readers who actually didn’t like The Thrawn Trilogy, but we don’t know them personally.  We don’t associate with people like that.

Movies:

It looks like the Hollywood remake wagon train is still plodding along.  Latest report is Angelina Jolie starring in the title role of Disney’s Sleeping Beauty remake, Maleficent.  Further word is Elle Fanning is in talks to play Aurora.  The film will be directed by Robert Stromberg from a script penned by Linda Woolverton.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jolie says her children want her to make the movie and refer to her as “mom-elicent”.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, NBC has announced that Jason Isaacs’ new TV series, Awake, is scheduled to debut March 1.

Awake is a sci-fi crime drama and Isaacs plays a police detective, Michael Britten, who awakens after a car accident involving his wife and son.  Britten moves between two realities where in one his wife dies and the other his son dies.  Britten starts living a double life, attempting to keep both wife and son alive, while noticing strange links between the realities.

Over on Entertainment Weekly they’re reporting that J.J. Abrams has sold a sci-fi apocalypse pilot to NBC titled Revolution.

“A high octane action drama from J. J. Abrams following a group of characters struggling to survive and reunite with loved ones in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist.”

This is the second descriptive blurb released for Revolution, but the first sounded distinctly familiar to TNT’s Falling Skies.  What with Awake debuting in March, Falling Skies returning in the summer, and Revolution set for the fall, at least it won’t be a total TV desert when it comes to scifi.

George Lucas is at it again and we can already hear the fanboy wailing.  EW also has an article on Lucas changing puppet Yoda to digital in The Phantom Menace 3D.  I don’t know how good  the film will be in 3D, but it’s going to be fun to watch the dilemma for the fanboys who will probably be torn between their disdain for TPM and their reactionary ranting regarding any changes to the Star Wars films.

First off and particularly pertinent to this blog is this Sunday’s Oprah’s Next Chapter on her network, Own.  The hour long show features Oprah interviewing Star Wars creator, George Lucas.  Included will be a tour of Skywalker Ranch.  If you’ve seen her other interviews — Steven Tyler for one — this one should be worth the watch.  The show will air Sunday, January 22, 9/8c. Over on Syfy, they’re doing their Christmas week countdown.  Kicking things off on Saturday December 3 is the Syfy original movie, Snowmageddon.  I may have to give that watch just because of the title, and well, it’s a Syfy original movie.  You know how those are.  Sunday and Monday, December 4 and 5, you can catch the movie Neverland, a prequel to Peter Pan.  Holiday episodes include Eureka and Warehouse 13, Tuesday, December 6.

And if you’re into Steampunk, they have a fantastic gift guide.

Syfy also reports that while Walking Dead did well in last week’s ratings, Terra Nova slumped.  The Clones Wars manage to hold its own.

Geek Tyrant reports that True Grit star, Hailee Steinfeld, is in negotiations to play of Petra Arkanian in Ender’s Game.  As well, Harrison Ford may get the role of Colonel Hyrum Graff.
