Ahsoka by E. K. Johnston, is a young adult novel in the canon that was released in October of 2016.

This book has an interesting place in my heart, because I had already started reading Star Wars books in 2016, but this was the first book that I bought on release day and read in a 24 hour period of time.

After reading Queen’s Shadow and Queen’s Peril, I was disappointed with E. K. Johnston’s writing as a whole. When I realized I’d have to reread Ahsoka, I was afraid I wouldn’t like it now as much as I did back in 2016.

I was wrong.

Queen’s Peril by E. K. Johnston is out today in hardcover, digital and audiobook formats. This book serves as a prequel to her previous novel Queen’s Shadow.

When fourteen-year-old Padmé Naberrie wins the election for Queen of Naboo, she adopts the name Amidala and leaves her family to the rule from the royal palace. To keep her safe and secure, she’ll need a group of skilled handmaidens who can be her assistants, confidantes, defenders, and decoys. Each girl is selected for her particular talents, but it will be up to Padmé to unite them as a group. When Naboo is invaded by forces of the Trade Federation, Queen Amidala and her handmaidens will face the greatest test–of themselves, and of each other.

Book Review: ‘Queen’s Shadow’ by E. K. Johnston

If you want to know more about Padme and her handmaidens, Queen’s Shadow is definitely the book you’re looking for. There’s not a lot of action and excitement, and it’s definitely a slower paced story, but the character exploration keeps it interesting. In this book you get to dive into Padme’s head and find out what her reasoning is, who she is as a person, and why she does the things she does. You also get to find out who the handmaidens are and what their role is in all of this. It makes for an interesting book. Click here to read our full review.

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.

Ausfans Radio: Episode 31 features a great interview with author John Jackson Miller covering his new trilogy Star Trek: Prey. They talk about Prey, the films, the tv series, his previous Star Trek stories, and what else he has coming out. Good audio quality and very impressive for an international interview as those don’t typically have the best audio quality. Good one to check out.

Beltway Banthas: Episode XIII is a fun one as they spotlight the Star Wars character Mas Amedda and discuss his role in the politics of Star Wars. I have to admit, I’d never really considered how important his character would have been, and it definitely seems a shame that Chuck Wendig didn’t play up on that a little better in Life Debt. They do talk about the character’s role in Life Debt which could be considered a little spoilery if you haven’t read that book yet. This episode features guest Mike DeRose. If you’re an Amedda fan, you’ll love this one, and if you’re not, you might just come away with a better understanding of the character.

Bombad Radio: In Memory of Eric Cone episode pays homage to their friend and Bombad Radio contributor Eric Cone who recently passed. They talk about his deep fandom, his love for Batman, Star Trek and the creators and artists, and they share memories of the good times they had. Nice episode which manages to stay upbeat while still paying tribute to a lost friend. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…
