Star Trek: Vanguard: Precipice is the fifth novel in the Vanguard series by David Mack. It was released by Pocket Books in December of 2009.

Reading the Vanguard books has been a challenging process. I read Harbinger in 2017 and did not particularly love it. I then read Summon the Thunder and Reap the Whirlwind in 2020 and liked them even less. I waited yet again until 2022 to read Open Secrets, and while I enjoyed that book more than the others, it still felt mediocre overall.

This book, however, breaks the mediocre streak and tells a really interesting story!

Star Trek: Harm’s Way is the newest novel set in the original oeries era by David Mack. It was released by Simon and Schuster’s Gallery Books imprint in December of 2022.

David Mack has a long and storied career with Star Trek books. He has written over 30 in his tenure there, making him one of the most widely published authors along with Peter David and Dayton Ward. Along with Peter David, Mack is the one other author I’ve heard many many people call their “Favorite Star Trek Author.”

And for good reason, because he turns in amazing books!

Star Trek: Zero Sum Game is the first novel in the Typhon Pact line of novels. It was written by David Mack and was released in November of 2010.

David Mack has turned in several amazing books. His Destiny Trilogy is truly legendary for the scope and sheer audacity. His The Fall novel Ceremony of Losses was one of the best thematic books in Star Trek. His A Time to books and his Legacies book were both really stellar! Unfortunately, this book does not live up to the others.

Star Trek: Coda: Oblivion’s Gate is the third and final novel in the Coda trilogy, which was written by David Mack and was released in November of 2021.

Twenty years of Star Trek literature has led to this. Titan, DS9, Voyager, Aventine, Next Generation, Mirror Universe, Section 31, and more have contributed to what we have known as the Lit-Verse or Post-Nemesis line of Star Trek novels. We all knew it was coming to an end in this trilogy, and thus knew to gird our feelings…

…but did we know it would feel like this?

Star Trek: A Time to Heal is the eighth novel in the A Time to series produced by Pocket Books at Simon and Schuster and was written by David Mack and was released in September 2004.

A Time to Heal picks up soon after the events of A Time to Kill, although the stakes are higher in this book than in any of the other books in the series. If something goes wrong here, there could be a galactic war on a scale never seen before in Star Trek. As a result, this book has an edge of tension that makes the reader feel like they just have to finish it. David Mack is very obviously a much better writer than his predecessors of this series, even this early in his career.

Star Trek: A Time to Kill is the seventh novel in the A Time to series produced by Pocket Books at Simon and Schuster and was written by David Mack and was released in August 2004.

I have been largely critical of the A Time to series thus far. I found that John Vornholt’s books had excellent ideas, but were poorly executed. Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore’s books matched the tone of Star Trek, but were very boring. Robert Greenberger’s books had excellent pacing, but lacked a lot of substance and were entirely too short. Well, for the first time in the series, David Mack has changed the game and has turned in a fabulous novel!

What sets this book apart from its predecessors is it’s execution. All of the books have had some military-political angles that have been interesting, this book puts a laser focus on it. This whole book is a political thriller in the vein of Jack Ryan novels but is set in the Star Trek universe. Mack is able to deftly thread the political thriller and Star Trek feelings well, creating a unique and exciting novel.

Book Review: ‘A Ceremony of Losses’

Star Trek: The Fall: A Ceremony of Losses is the third book in The Fall crossover series of books, written by David Mack and released in October of 2013.

I have heard many times that David Mack is one of (if not the best) Star Trek authors and that this series, The Fall, was one of the best series. So when you combine the best author with the best series, it should be a good combination….and it certainly was!

I’ve read some of Mack’s other books. I read the Destiny Trilogy, which is the epic crossover trilogy about the Borg, and it was fantastic. It wasn’t what was promised, but it was well done. I also read the first few books in his (and Dayton Ward’s) Vanguard series, which I didn’t care for. So overall, I’ve had a mixed bag with Mack.
