Retro Reviews: ‘Dark Disciple’ by Christie Golden

Dark Disciple by Christie Golden is the first novel in the canon to utilize unproduced scripts from The Clone Wars television series, originally written by Dave Filoni, Matt Michnovetz, and Katie Lucas. It was released in July of 2015.
The first thing I have to say is that Christie Golden did exactly what any novelizer should do. She added information and beats to the story to make it flow better, but kept true to the facts and spirit of the original story. She made something made for kids television translate into a novel for adults. That would be a daunting enough challenge, even if it wasn’t a Star Wars property, and yet Christie Golden met that challenge head on and did a great job. Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Card Trader Illuminerdi: While there’s a handful of Star Wars podcasts I listen to on a regular basis, I try to branch out and listen to new ones every now and then. And yes, I do follow through on suggested ones (so feel free to hit me up with your suggestions). I got a poke on Facebook suggesting I listen to Card Trader Illuminerdy, so I did. First off, these guys live up to their name. They go in deep on the Star Wars Topps Trading App covering new cards, upcoming releases, and even the odds on different cards. Unfortunately if you’re unfamiliar to the trading app (like me) the discussion quickly gets overwhelming. I couldn’t really follow along with a lot of the stuff they were talking about. But, if you’re a big fan of the app, this may be the podcast you’re looking for. It’s certainly the only podcast I’ve heard of focusing on the game, they’ve got a good mix of hosts, good audio quality, and there’s some nice additions of humor and information. In particular, I checked out the July.17.2015 Episode.
Coffee With Kenobi: Coffee Chat with Pablo Hidalgo features a conversation with Pablo covering storytelling, Star Wars, and insight on the story group. I especially enjoyed hearing his comments on how they’re handling Vader as a character. The only downside to the episode is that Pablo’s audio is a little crummy, everyone else is fine. Still worth a listen.
Comic Book Noob: Ant-Man episode is a nice little episode that provides some background on the main characters in the Ant-Man comics, their many iterations, and how it ties into the film. It doesn’t spoil anything and for anyone unfamiliar with Ant-Man (like me) it gives some much needed insight on the character and the series without diving too deep into the subject matter and getting bogged down. It stays light, informational, entertaining, and gives just the right about of info for fans new to the character. I have to say the Comic Book Noob episodes are a great thing to check out. I’m really enjoying them so far.

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Big Beautiful Podcast: Episode 18 features an interview with author Christie Golden as they discuss her novel Star Wars: Dark Disciple, Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the prequels. This being my first time listening to this podcast, I was impressed with the sound quality and the hosts had some good questions which makes it worth checking out. I might be listening to some more episodes of this podcasts, especially if I can find some more Star Wars interviews.
Coffee With Kenobi: Rebels Reactions: The Siege of Lothal features Cory, Dan and Jeff as they discuss the episode with a nice, thorough breakdown. There’s a lot of thematic coverage that dives deep into the underlying story and the connective tissue of the premiere. With Cory, Dan and Jeff directing the discussion, it’s a dynamic trio.
Book Chat with Christie Golden has a nice, spoiler light discussion with the author of Dark Disciple. Dan and Cory do a great job as interviewers digging into some good subjects. Definitely a good one to check out.
Episode 39 begins with a donation thing they’re doing. The Bearded Trio provides an update on Jurassic World and the box office records it’s broke along with other Spielberg news. They talk about Star Wars SDCC exclusives before diving into their main topic: the music of Star Wars. For this segment they bring on guest Steve Torok whose music they use for the podcast. Ending things off is some listener feedback. Another great episode for Star Wars fans. Continue Reading Podcasts in Review…

Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review.
Bombad Radio: Episode 202 features an interview with author Christie Golden as they talk about her latest book Dark Disciple. Christie talks about the project and the unique challenges involved. She also mentions that the first four episodes of the eight episode TCW arc had animatics which she was able to watch as part of her research for the book. The interview also touches on Starcraft and Warcraft. Good interview overall.
EndorCast: Episode IV has an audio clip of Robert Englund laying the story straight on his involvement with Star Wars and how he got Mark Hamill to audition, which is pretty cool. They also have guests Gus Lopez and Amy from the Ewok Builders Club on to talk about the club which is still pretty new and gaining momentum. Afterwards they talk with the Perales family about cosplaying as Star Wars Rebels characters. Nice episode with a cosplaying focus you might want to check out.
Fly Casual: Episode 44 has some news from Kylo Ren’s stuntman who talks about the security onset. Trank talks about fan hate, and they get into some toy news with the San Diego Comic Con Hasbro six inch Black Series The Force Awakens trooper exclusive, the Han and Tauntaun, the Funko C-3PO, Disney Infinity 3.0 Star Wars Rebels figures, and they talk a little about the E3 Star Wars: Battlefront videos.
Book Review: Dark Disciple

Dark Disciple by Christie Golden is the latest addition to the new official Star Wars canon. Adapted from a script by Katie Lucas, Dave Filoni and Matt Michnovetz for the cancelled TV show, Star Wars The Clone wars, the novel tells the story of the Jedi mission to assassinate Count Dooku. Fair warning, spoilers ahead.
After nearly three years of war and countless atrocities by Dooku, the Jedi Council has reached a point of desperation, and decides on the grim course of assassinating the Sith lord. Chosen for the assignment is Jedi Master Quinlan Vos, and he’s charged with making an ally out of the one person who could conceivable be his means of success — Asajj Ventress. The Jedi Council’s logic is sound. The unconventional Vos, with his loner ways, and undercover missions seems to be the best choice of Jedi, and while Asajj has no love for the Jedi, she hates Dooku with her whole being. Vos and Ventress can’t succeed alone, but they could very well be strong enough to succeed together. Quinlan and Asajj become allies and lovers, lovers who are truly in love, who freely decide to have a future together. Ventress undertakes to groom Vos for their dangerous undertaking, and Dathomir plays a part in that grooming. She knows Quinlan will need to understand and command the dark side as she does — walking on the knife edge without falling into total darkness — but the training is cut short when their chance to eliminate Dooku comes too soon. Ventress embarks on the mission with Vos with grave misgivings, and she’s right. Quinlan Vos is not ready, and as a result, Ventress loses him to Dooku. Determined to save him and their future together, Ventress returns to confront the dark lord again. Continue Reading Book Review: Dark Disciple…
New Release: ‘Dark Disciple’ by Christie Golden
July 7, 2015 at 12:01 am | Posted in Books, Random House, Star Wars, Star Wars Books | Leave a commentTags: christie golden, dark disciple
Star Wars: Dark Disciple by Christie Golden is out today in hardcover, digital and audiobook formats.
Based on unproduced episodes of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, this new novel features Asajj Ventress, former Sith apprentice turned bounty hunter and one of the great antiheroes in the Star Wars galaxy.
The only way to bring down the Sith’s most dangerous warrior may be to join forces with the dark side.In the war for control of the galaxy between the armies of the dark side and the Republic, former Jedi Master turned ruthless Sith Lord Count Dooku has grown ever more brutal in his tactics. Despite the powers of the Jedi and the military prowess of their clone army, the sheer number of fatalities is taking a terrible toll. And when Dooku orders the massacre of a flotilla of helpless refugees, the Jedi Council feels it has no choice but to take drastic action: targeting the man responsible for so many war atrocities, Count Dooku himself.
But the ever-elusive Dooku is dangerous prey for even the most skilled hunter. So the Council makes the bold decision to bring both sides of the Force’s power to bear—pairing brash Jedi Knight Quinlan Vos with infamous one-time Sith acolyte Asajj Ventress. Though Jedi distrust for the cunning killer who once served at Dooku’s side still runs deep, Ventress’s hatred for her former master runs deeper. She’s more than willing to lend her copious talents as a bounty hunter—and assassin—to Vos’s quest.
Together, Ventress and Vos are the best hope for eliminating Dooku—as long as the emerging feelings between them don’t compromise their mission. But Ventress is determined to have her retribution and at last let go of her dark Sith past. Balancing the complicated emotions she feels for Vos with the fury of her warrior’s spirit, she resolves to claim victory on all fronts—a vow that will be mercilessly tested by her deadly enemy . . . and her own doubt.
