Suvudu Interview with Drew Karpyshyn
August 26, 2013 at 1:02 pm | Posted in Books, Fantasy, Interview | Leave a commentTags: children of fire, drew karpyshyn
Suvudu posted an interview with author Drew Karpyshyn covering his new book Children of Fire which will be out tomorrow.
The world of Children of Fire seems to be morally ambiguous. As a culture, we seem to have drifted away from simpler ideas of “good guys vs. bad guys”. Why is that? Why did you choose to pursue this direction?
Drew Karpyhsyn: I think there’s more value and interest in characters that don’t fit the classic hero/villain archetypes. A flawless, pure, noble hero can be kind of boring, and it’s impossible for most of us average folks to relate to. Similarly, a purely evil villain comes across as cartoonish. I want to be able to understand and accept the motivations of the bad guy; even if I don’t agree with them, I want to see how his or her actions could seem reasonable from that point of view.

Karphyshn on ‘Children of Fire’
August 16, 2013 at 9:41 am | Posted in Books, Fantasy | Leave a commentTags: children of fire, drew karpyshyn, the chaos born
Drew Karpyshyn wrote a post for Suvudu talking about that magical time between August and September, escaping into fantasy book, and how his writing career has let to Children of Fire.
Now, ten novels and twenty five years later, I’m finally equal to the task. Children of Fire is the culmination of everything I have written and read. It’s the first book in an epic trilogy that pays homage to the classic fantasy authors that kindled the creative spark inside me so long ago. The plot is driven by a kinetic style that reflects my work in video games and my sci-fi action novels. And throughout the work you’ll find dark and disturbing elements inspired by the horror masters that sent chills down my spine and made me sleep with the lights on.
Click here to read the full article. Children of Fire will be out on August 27, the same day as John Jackson Miller’s Kenobi. You can check out all the details on Random House’s product page including retailer links and a pretty big excerpt from the book. If you like Karpyshyn’s writing, this is one book you will not want to miss.

Author Drew Karpyshyn posted a great update on his blog covering his writing process, specifically for his upcoming book Children of Fire, which you can read below.
Step One – Start with an Idea
People often ask me where I get my ideas. I’m sorry, but that’s a question I can’t answer. I already have ideas. I have lots and lots of ideas. They just pop into my head at random times, sometimes inspired by something I read, see or hear; other times they seem to come from some mystical creative ether. When I get an idea, I add it to my idea file. That file is overflowing (digitally) with ideas – I’ll die long before I use them all up. And I’m constantly getting new ideas for the file.
