Big Shiny Robot Interviews Paul S. Kemp
June 7, 2012 at 11:45 am | Posted in Books, Fantasy, Interview | Leave a commentTags: angry robot books, paul s. kemp, tales of egil and nix, the hammer and the blade
Big Shiny Robot posted an interview today with author Paul S. Kemp. As all of the other recent Kemp interviews, this one covers his upcoming sword and sorcery novel The Hammer and the Blade.
And the world you created here was so fully realized, will we be seeing more stories not involving Egil and Nix at any point?
PK: Interesting question and one I honestly haven’t considered. For the time being, I’m content to show the world through Egil and Nix’s eyes, but I guess you never know. Tangent: I’m delighted to hear you found the world evocative. That’s a tricky thing in sword and sorcery fiction. On the one hand, it shouldn’t be an encyclopedic reference book for a secondary world (we can leave that to epic fantasy). On the other hand, there still needs to be a strong sense of place. I’m glad to hear it worked for you.

Civilian Reader Interview with Paul S. Kemp
June 6, 2012 at 9:57 am | Posted in Books, Fantasy, Interview | Leave a commentTags: angry robot books, paul s. kemp, tales of egil and nix, the hammer and the blade
Civilian Reader has posted an interview with author Paul S. Kemp covering his upcoming novel The Hammer and the Blade…
“The Hammer and the Blade is my attempt to tell a story like that, a tale that is unabashedly, unapologetically, a great adventure story – pacey, with cracking dialog and compelling characters, with both dark moments and laugh out loud moments sprinkled liberally throughout. I hope I managed to do it, and I hope it evokes in someone the same glorious sense of fun that Leiber, Howard, and Moorcock’s work did for me.” -Paul S. Kemp
I can’t recall if this had been revealed yet or not, but Paul also mentioned that his upcoming Star Wars duology will be in hardcover.

Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming fantasy novel The Hammer and the Blade, published by Angry Robot Books?
PSK: Sure. The Hammer and the Blade is a sword and sorcery novel featuring a pair of likeable rakes named Egil and Nix. It’s fast paced with (what I think are) enormously compelling characters. And it’s a helluva lot of fun.

She smiled shyly, sat, and nodded at the wand. “What’s that?”
“’This? This is nothing, just one of my gewgaws, as Egil would say. I took it from the tomb of an Afirion wizard-king after defeating the devil that guarded it.”
He spoke casually, but his words summoned the response he’d hoped for. Her eyes widened with wonder and she made a circle of her ring finger and thumb, a protective gesture, the symbol of Orella. She leaned in close to him, and he felt the warmth of her through his clothes. Her hair smelled of vanilla and the scent made him more lightheaded than Gadd’s smoke.
