The Force Awakens is the novelization to the blockbuster of the same name from December of 2015. The original screenplay was written by Lawrence Kasdan, J. J. Abrams and Michael Arndt, and the novelization was written by Alan Dean Foster.

First off, this is going to be a controversial review. I personally loved The Force Awakens movie when I first saw it, and I still love it. It’s one of my favorite Star Wars movies. However, I did not like the novelization of the film at all. I believe that this is a textbook case of how not to write a novelization. But I will blunt my criticism off the bat by saying that there are some great things in the novelization, well worth your read.

I’ll start with the positives. There are some great, short insights about Leia and her work with the Resistance and her search for Luke that are really good. It adds to the film for me and makes me appreciate Leia. I also love how Foster included several of the deleted scenes/dialogue for Leia and Han’s scenes, some of which actually was repurposed for The Rise of Skywalker, which I didn’t realize until this reread. New Books Announced at NYCC

Being revealed at New York Comic Con, there’s some cool news regarding upcoming Star Wars books.

  • The titles for the next two books in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath trilogy are Life Debt and Empire’s End. The second book will be out Summer 2016 and the final book in 2017.
  • Lost Stars author Claudia Gray will be writing another Star Wars novel, this one called New Republic: Bloodline. Note that this will not be a sequel to Lost Stars but a brand new story set six years before The Force Awakens. The book will be out in Spring 2016.
  • Delilah S. Dawson will be writing an eBook short called “The Perfect Weapon” which will focus on a character named Bazine (who was featured in the Vanity Fair alien photo shoot, the one in the lap of that bulky Bossk looking guy). It’ll be out in November. Delilah is new to Star Wars, so this will be her first story in the galaxy far, far away. To find out more about her, you can check out her official website and peruse some of her novels.
  • Landry Walker, also new to Star Wars, will be writing a series of novelettes: “High Noon on Jakku”, “All Creatures Great and Small”, “The Face of Evil”, and “The Crimson Corsair and the Lost Treasure of Count Dooku.” They’ll be released on December 1st. Walker is mostly known for his comic work and landed on the New York Times Best Sellers List for his graphic novel Odd Thomas.
  • Alan Dean Foster will be writing a short story called “Bait” which ties into The Force Awakens and will be appearing in Star Wars Insider #162 (on sale December 23). It stars Grungar, the bulky looking Bossk guy in the Vanity Fair photo shoot.

Happy Birthday, Alan Dean Foster

alan-dean-fosterToday we wish a happy birthday to the first Star Wars author, Alan Dean Foster. Star Wars: From the Adventures of Luke Skywalker (aka the Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope novelization) may not bear his name, as it was ghost written and still says by George Lucas, but he still gets the credit. And as if being first wasn’t good enough, he was also second with Splinter of the Mind’s Eye, which to this day is still one of the weirdest Star Wars novels out there with Luke’s creepy love interest in Leia, a swamp planet intended as a cheap way to make a sequel movie, and a giant worm that tries to eat everyone. If there’s one book truly worthy of being placed under the Legends banner, it would be that one.

Star Trek Into Darkness has hit theaters and today it hits bookshelves with the novelization by Alan Dean Foster. The Star Trek Into Darkness novelization is available in both paperback and digital formats. One has to wonder if Alan Dean Foster will also be chosen for the Star Wars Episode VII novelization. Fans will just have to wait and see.
