Here is this week’s Podcasts in Review. Lot of great interviews this week.

BNN: Episode 9.14.2015 is something a little different from the folks of Bombad Radio as they try a shorter, news focused podcast that’s actually pretty useful. They bring the news with a touch of humor, touching on not just Star Wars, but other topics like Batman v. Superman, Jurassic World, upcoming movies, home releases, video games, comics, webshows, etc. If you’re wondering what’s coming out now, or what news came out this week, then this is a great way to catch up. Best of all, they pack it all in under 30 minutes. I really like the short format and I think it works great for news. It’s very convenient for sliding the episodes in between your normal podcasts on your playlist, thus allowing you to get the news and not fall behind, but also not get stuck with a one to two hour show. The one drawback I noticed in this episode, however, is that the rundown on new comic releases was really long, big info dump, and that’s kind of hard to get away from as a lot of comics come out every week. They might need to work on that a little (either just highlighting the popular titles or some choice picks), otherwise it’s pretty solid. Keep in mind this is their inaugural episode for BNN.

Collectors Cast: Episode 11 is their Force Friday episode with them giving their thoughts on the new collectibles, LEGO, the packaging, the new Falcon, Black Series, Disney Elite Series, talking figures and masks, BB-8 and some live reporting from the UK. They talk at length with fellow collectors Duncan Jenkins and with Steve Sansweet which rounds out the episode.

Comics With Kenobi: Episode #6 covers Shattered Empire #1, which they loved, and Darth Vader #9, which they didn’t love. Lots of spoilers, so if you haven’t read the issues, be sure to read them first before listening. They have some great discussion covering the artwork as much as the writing. Personally I was of an opposite opinion of the hosts, as I rather liked Darth Vader #9 and thought Shattered Empire #1 fell kind of flat. If you’re into the comics, give these guys a listen. Book Review: ‘Aftermath’ by Chuck Wendig

There has been much to say about Chuck Wendig’s all important Aftermath. This is not only his first Star Wars novel, the first adult Star Wars novel to use present tense, and our first literary look of what it’s like on Jakku, but it’s also the first post-Return of the Jedi novel since the books became canon. What Timothy Zahn once did for the EU, Chuck Wendig is now doing for canon. What did the Rebellion do following the attack on Endor? What was the Empire’s reaction to the death of their top leadership? What comes next? These are the subjects being tackled. This is the groundwork being laid for which all future canon novels in the post-ROTJ era will be based. The question is, does Aftermath pull it off? Click here to read our full—and rather lengthy—review.

Ewok_Corner_smallThe State of the EU

According to Disney, the old Star Wars Expanded Universe, the vast wealth of stories, comics and novels, are all a part of Legends now. Moving forward, books and comics are a part of canon. So far we have seen Del Rey and Marvel both take their their first steps in the realm of canon with A New Dawn, Star Wars, Tarkin, Darth Vader, Princess Leia, Heir to the Jedi and Kanan: The Last Padawan. These tentative first steps have tread lightly on the expanded universe we used to know. However, this Fall, that will all change with the Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

It was first announced on EW.com and followed up by further announcements on StarWars.com that the lead up to the release of The Force Awakens would be preceded by over 20 new books. From sticker books for kids to a new adult novel from Del Rey, the publishing lineup is all a part of their Journey to Star Wars: The Force Awakens campaign. Among those involved are Marvel, Del Rey, DK Books, Studio Fun International, Egmont UK, Topps, Phoenix International Publications, Disney-Lucasfilm Press and Disney Publishing Worldwide.

At first, book lovers rejoiced at the initial announcement, “Twenty new books!” Then reality and the details dawned on us. Yes, 20 new books, but really it’s just two new Marvel comics and one new Star Wars novel with a few extra young reader stories that may or may not be of interest to adult readers. I don’t think there are too many people excited by new sticker books or look and find books.

So, what does Aftermath have in store for us? What will it mean for Star Wars readers? And how will it affect Legends? Continue Reading Ewok Corner: The State of the EU…

‘Star Wars: Aftermath’ Author and Cover Reveal

StarWars.com has revealed the cover and the author for Aftermath. Check it out.

I’m also excited to share with you that Aftermath will be written by Chuck Wendig, the critically-acclaimed author of Blackbirds, Mockingbird, Under the Empyrean Sky, and many other novels, as well as countless blog posts about the craft and business of writing. We’re thrilled that he agreed to work on this epic new project with us.

The second Death Star has been destroyed. Rumors are flying that the Emperor and his enforcer, Darth Vader, are dead. A new government is forming to replace the Empire. But the galaxy is a big place, and the fallout of this cataclysm will affect different worlds in different ways. Does everyone accept the fall of Imperial rule? Has everyone even heard the life-altering news? What rushes in to fill the vacuum the Empire has left? And who will try to stop them? Those are some of the themes we’ll be exploring in Aftermath, and as a lifelongStar Wars fan, just writing those words gives me chills. I can’t wait for our first canon glimpse into the state of the galaxy after the Battle of Endor.

What’s more, Aftermath will be the first book in a trilogy that begins to bridge the Star Wars timeline between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens. There is so much unknown between the Battle of Endor and the events of The Force Awakens, and we’re excited to take our first step into that space.

Obviously I wish I could tell you more about the story, but I can’t just yet. What I can reveal is that you will be introduced to a sweeping new cast of characters, along with a fan favorite from the films. And who knows what other familiar faces will pop up along the way? And once you’ve seen The Force Awakens in movie theaters, you may find that certain names and places in Aftermath have a relevance you never knew–so keep your eyes wide open! -Jennifer Heddle, Editor Lucas Books

‘Aftermath’ Synopsis?

March 10, 2015 at 6:16 pm | Posted in Books, Random House, Star Wars, Star Wars Books | Leave a comment

aftermath-placeholderScouring the web for further news on the upcoming Star Wars book titles, everyone is pointing to Jedi-Bibliothek and the synopsis for “Untitled Novel #4” on Barnes & Noble. The synopsis reads…

Journey to The Force Awakens.

The second Death Star is destroyed. The Emperor and his powerful enforcer, Darth Vader, are rumored to be dead. The Galactic Empire is in chaos.

Across the galaxy, some systems celebrate, while in others Imperial factions tighten their grip. Optimism and fear reign side by side.

And while the Rebel Alliance engages the fractured forces of the Empire, a lone Rebel scout uncovers a secret Imperial meeting…

Among the details, the publisher is Random House Publishing Group with a release date of September 4, 2015. Interestingly enough, this particular entry is for the eBook. Note the “Pages: 320” is probably a placeholder at this point. While the book is listed elsewhere, B&N has the most info posted, and is currently the only one with a synopsis, assuming it’s correct. Whatever way it goes, it’s some food for thought.
