Orbit Books has posted a cool interview done by John Scalzi with renown author Matthew Stover.

John Scalzi:Heroes Die, the first book in the Caine series, in many ways presaged the current wave of “grimdark” fantasy – those works with lots of unapologetic action and violence threaded into their tales. At the time you were writing the book, were you aware you were slashing a new path through that particular jungle? Or were you just focused on writing a story you wanted to tell?

Matthew Stover: I wasn’t trying to do something new. I was only trying to do something good.

I started writing the story that eventually became Heroes Die when I was seventeen. A variety of versions were submitted to, and summarily rejected by, a variety of publishers over the course of the next eighteen years. I tried every approach I could think of to make the story appealing to editors, but nothing worked. Finally – in despair – I said to myself, “Screw this shit. If it’s going to fail anyway, write the goddamn thing exactly how you want it to be. At least you’ll have that.” So I did. And here we are.

This is why my first advice to younger writers is to write the book you wish somebody else would write so you could read it.

Acts-of-Caine-covers-lineThe Acts of Caine will be released in a couple of weeks, and author Matthew Stover has a request to make of his fans.

Okay, here we go.

The Acts of Caine will be released to the entire English-speaking world in a couple of weeks. Now I’m going to ask a favor of you. Of all of you.

Post reader reviews. At Amazon.com, Amason.co.uk (when they’ll let you), and at B&N, Powell’s and every bookselling site you can access. If you’re reading this, I’m guessing that your review will be four or five stars (though I’m okay with honesty; if you think they’re worth less, post a shitty review. I forgive you in advance. So does Caine). What I want is numbers. What Caine needs is numbers.

Around 600 people like this page, but HEROES DIE has only 69 reviews on Amazon.com. Does that make sense to you? I have almost 500 friends on Facebook, but only 115 of them have liked this page. Does that make sense to you? It doesn’t really make sense to me. Continue Reading Caine Needs Your Help…

Unfortunately there are no new Star Wars projects on the horizon for Mr. Stover, however, he has been busy with a few other items. First off, if you’ve been following him on Facebook you know that he has written a script for a TV demo pilot that is currently being filmed right now and the consensus is that everyone likes what he wrote. That’s no surprise to us fans, but it is good news and hopefully brings about some new projects for Mr. Stover. I’m sure we would all enjoy a TV series with him in the writing department.

On other fronts Mr. Stover’s upcoming novel His Father’s Fist has been renamed to Caine’s Law and has been given a February release date. A few hints have been dropped that the cover art for this book should be nothing less than spectacular. Personally, I can’t wait to see it. If you are unfamiliar with Mr. Stover’s work, Caine’s Law will be the fourth book in the Acts of Caine series. The previous books are Heroes Die, Blade of Tyshalle, and Caine Black Knife. The series is a wicked combination of sci-fi and fantasy set in a future world were ‘actors’ journey to another realm (Overworld) to slay orcs and go off on quests for the entertainment of everyone on Earth.

If you’d like to keep up to date with the events surrounding the TV pilot Mr. Stover is working on, as well as some behind the scenes commentary, then check out Matthew Stover’s Facebook page here, or head on over to his blog for more info including updates on all things Overworld.
