If you’re wondering whether or not to pick up Drew Karpyshyn’s Annihilation, Suvudu is offering a fifty page preview to convince you.  Here’s what author Karpyshyn has to say about his character, Theron Shan:

Theron was a really fun character to write; he’s not as grim or serious as Bane or Revan. He knows the stakes are high, but he’s got an irreverant vibe about him that sets him apart from some of my other characters. As much as I loved writing about all-powerful Sith and Jedi, I honestly think this book is my best Star Wars work to date because the character has to work so much harder to succeed.

And, yes, Theron is the descendent of famous Jedi-turned-Sith-turned-Jedi Revan.  You can find the preview here on Suvudu’s site.

Today Christie Golden’s latest novel hits book stores. Fable: Edge of the World is a fantasy story based on the popular video game franchise and serves as a prequel for the upcoming Fable: The Journey.

It’s been almost a decade since the events of Fable 3, when the Hero vanquished the threat across the sea and claimed his throne. As king he led Albion to an era of unprecedented peace and prosperity. But on the night of his wedding to his new queen, ominous word arrives: The darkness has returned.

Beyond a harrowing mountain pass, the exotic desert country Samarkand has been overrun by shadowy forces. Within the walls of its capital city, a mysterious usurper known only as the Empress has seized control. To protect his realm, the king must lead his most trusted allies into a strange land unknown to outsiders. As they forge ahead along Samarkand’s ancient Great Road, populated by undead terrors and fantastic creatures once believed to be the stuff of legend, the king is drawn ever closer to his greatest challenge yet.

But soon Albion is engulfed in a war of its own. As the darkness spreads, town by town, a treacherous force has infiltrated the queen’s circle. Now the fate of all that is good rests with a faint flicker of hope . . . that somewhere, somehow, heroes still do exist.

You can read the first 50 pages online for free right here. Fable: Edge of the World is out in both paperback and digital formats.

Suvudu Fifty Page Friday: Mercy Kill

As a pre-release treat, Suvudu has dedicated this Fifty Page Friday to Aaron Allston’s Mercy Kill.  After a 13 year absence from the X-wing series, Aaron had this to say about adding an addition to the popular X-wing series.

“Imagine attending your first family reunion in 13 years — or maybe it’s 37 years, you’re bad with numbers. You’re very anxious to attend, but the prospect of getting to reacquaint yourself with long-lost relatives, to get to know their kids, to catch up on their lives, just to remember all their names, is daunting.

That’s sort of what it was like to write the opening chapters of X-Wing: Mercy Kill. Most of the novel is set 37 years after the last time Wraith Squadron was the genuine center of action of a book, making me the person in charge of introductions at that long-awaited family reunion.

I chose to kick things off with a caper set only six years after the events of X-Wing: Solo Command — at nearly the same time X-Wing: Starfighters of Adumar was taking place, in fact. The first chapter would serve to reacquaint longtime readers with and to introduce new readers to the original Wraiths, plus demonstrate their methods. Then I could jump forward to the “modern,” post-Fate of the Jedi era to bring original and new Wraiths together, to showcase the new members of the unit, and to reveal the new challenges they face. Continuity, discontinuity, family, conflict, all at once.

Writing it was difficult, challenging, and fun.

Did everyone remember to bring a covered dish to pass? Good. Here we go…”

UPDATE: Nearly missed this – Suvudu also posted a 50 page excerpt from Greg Keyes latest novel which you can read here.

Greg Keyes has a new book out this week called Lord of Souls and it’s out now. Many Star Wars fans will remember Greg Keyes contribution to the NJO era with his three books Conquest, Rebirth, and The Final Prophecy. Lord of Souls is his second Elder Scrolls novel taking place 40 years after the Oblivion crisis and centers around the floating city of Umbriel and it’s undead army. As part of their Take Five promotion series, Suvudu asked Mr. Keyes to share five facts about his latest novel.

When playing Oblivion as research for this book, I was really taken with the city of Anvil. I’m not sure why – it just felt like home.

Be sure to head over to Suvudu to read all five of the interesting facts, including his inspiration for Umriel, tips for poisoning someone, his biggest difficulty with the series, and a rare Southeast Asian fruit that made it into the novel.
