“Before Optimus became a Prime…he fought for order. Before Megatron became a conqueror…he fought for freedom. Before they were enemies…they stood against Autocracy.”

If you’re even a tiny bit of a Transformers fan, Autocracy is a great comic to pick up. Filled with wonderful artwork and a rich story. Autocracy takes fans on a journey that fills in the backstory. How did Optimus Prime become a Prime? What were the origins of Megatron? How did the war on Cybertron happen? Autocracy sheds light on those questions and unveils a comic packed with entertainment.

Just to set the table, this is the first Transformers comic I’ve ever read. In comparison to other comics, this one not only holds its own, but shines. The story by Chris Metzen and Flint Dille is both engaging and entertaining. There’s great dialog by fan favorites such as Ironside, Bumblebee and Starscream. The story is deep with character and plot development. The panels have good pacing and fit naturally with the art. It’s top notch with drama and surprises.

The artwork speaks for itself. The whole reason I decided to check out this comic was the gorgeous visuals. Livio Ramondelli not only captures the likenesses of the robots, but he brings them to life. All of the panels have lush colors and lighting. Here and there, epic scenes stand out: the destruction of a city, the formation of an army, the sheer size of Metroplex as he towers over everything around him. Livio was a great choice for the artwork.

With stunning art and an engrossing story, Transformers: Autocracy is a comic well worth checking out. I was certainly impressed. Having gotten a taste of what these guys can do, I’ll be checking out their other comics. As is, I’m giving this one a perfect five out of five metal bikinis.
