The Other Dead #3 begins to click at the pieces fall together. President Obama links up with the main characters and the animal zombie apocalypse continues with a few laughs. It’s a gorey issue, but still an entertaining story. With a hurricane coming through, who knows what will happen next (Zombie Sharknado!).
The main characters go from point A to point B but it’s quite an adventure. They battle zombie alligators with a hummer. With a narrow escape by the survivors, they live only to be sneak attacked by squirrels. In most cases, that wouldn’t be a big deal. In this case, the squirrels are carnivorous freaks of nature who can climb and bite with the greatest of ease.
The art team takes a lot of joy in bringing the bloody details to life. From psychotic dogs tearing people’s faces off to alligators tearing people in two, it’s a horrific variety. Perhaps the grossest moment is when one of the characters bites back and tears an animal’s head off. There’s plenty of blood for those inclined to gore.
The story doesn’t progress too far and there isn’t a lot in the way of characterization in this issue. However, there’s some movement in the right direction. Obama kills his first animal zombie. One of the hunters turns out to be an ex-ranger with a massive arsenal. Plus there’s a hurricane hitting the town. Each of these factors is heading in a fun direction: a zombie-killing president, an arsenal waiting to be unleashed, and a hurricane of destruction.
Less gore and more characterization would be nice, but as is, this is still a fun comic. The art works, the story is decent, and there’s some fun elements. I give The Other Dead #3 a three and a half out of five metal bikinis.
