Beilert Valance is not a character I grew up with, and since I never did get around to reading those old Marvel Star Wars comics, he’s not a character I’m very familiar with. However, the idea in this comic is kind of intriguing. Not so much a team of hired guns going out to kill Darth Vader, but a cyborg, a female Gamorrean, a female Tusken sniper, an Ardennian slicer and Dengar all teaming up. That’s quite the eclectic group of rogues. It’s a good combination for some possible fun.

In this issue we get introduced to a group called The Hidden Hand. They’re weapons smugglers who are trying to arm the Rebellion. Vader, consequently, is trying to hunt them down. They retaliate by hiring the wild assortment mentioned above to take out Vader. Of course they won’t succeed, but the question is, how close will they come? And how does Dengar come out of this and then get re-hired by Vader later on to track down Solo? I’m intrigued to see what Robbie Thompson can do with this. The first issue packs a lot of potential and sets the stage for the story that will come.

The long lists of artists and colorists for this issue is a bit alarming at first, but they actually do a pretty darn good job at melding their styles together to not be too obtrusive. You can still see when the artists change up, or when the colorists change up, but it’s subtle and the attention to detail doesn’t waver. One style might vary a bit from the previous one, but they all manage to still be good. Overall, even with the shifting art, it’s a good looking comic.

With good art and a story with a lot of promise, Target Vader #1 is off to a good start. I give it a four out of five metal bikinis.
