For once, the cover actually represents what happens in the comic. Star Wars #66 is the showdown between Leia and Trios, but it’s not the end of the battle for Shu-Torun. In a twist of fate, Leia has brought the destruction of the planet and now she has to save it. But can she stop Benthic and his partisans? And can she survive the Imperial bombardment?

Beyond the usual action and the heroes never dying but cracking jokes all the same, there’s some interesting moments in this issue. On the smaller side, Benthic calls out R2 by holding Luke hostage. R2 actually comes out in order to prevent Luke from being killed by the partisans, and seeming initiates the destruction of the planet. One of the larger moments is the big fight between Trios and Leia. They actually take up bladed staffs and duke it out. Of course Leia wins, but Trios gives a drawn out little emotional death speech, first blaming Leia for destroying a world, then actually apologizing when she realizes Leia will try to save the planet. Meanwhile you’ve got a couple panels showing the death cult awaiting the destruction of the world. It’s interesting because I’m not sure if Leia will actually succeed in saving the planet, but would they really have her live with the guilt of losing two planets?

The artwork is really good with great detail, likeness, characters, action and scenery. The visuals are just top notch, from the line work to the coloring and lighting. The framework of the panels, highlighting just the right moments, does a great job of selling the scenes for all their worth.

With great visuals and a good story, I give Star Wars #66 a five out of five metal bikinis.
