Star Wars #45

Star Wars #45

Writer: Kieron Gillen
Artist: Salvador Larroca
Colorist: Guru-eFX
Letterer: Clayton Cowles
Cover Artists: David Marquez and Matthew Wilson

Star Wars #45 is an interesting issue. Gillen sets up an elaborate scheme to get Mon Cala to join the Rebellion. This leads to Leia and company to a prison breakout for a spy. There’s a well played twist that makes perfect sense for the plan. With action, story development, and character development, this issue has a bit of everything.

It kicks off in a cantina as Luke, Han and Chewie get some drinks. While there, they run into Wedge and some friends as they remember the sacrifice of Red Squadron. Elsewhere, Leia convinces the Rebel high command to not give up on Mon Cala. Together, they come up with a plan that might work. All of this leads to a prison breakout to free an interesting asset.

The writing is pretty strong in this issue. There’s a lot of dialog, a lot of scheming and planning, and a lot of story told in this issue. On the flip side, Larroca does a good job with the artwork, and I liked the colors. Some of the panels were really gorgeous. There was less polish than usual and more an an artistic feel.

With good artwork and good writing, I give this one a five out of five metal bikinis.
