The Twilight War: Book 3 – Shadowrealm

Shadowrealm is a great ending to another Erevis Cale trilogy. I truly loved the way this one ended, and I enjoyed it a lot more than the previous trilogy. Kemp weaves characters and epic plots into an amazing little story that provides both entertainment and satisfaction.

This novel takes the Erevis Cale series another step further into the shadows. The Shadowstorm is consuming Sembia. Magadon is losing himself to his archdevil father. Abelar and his people are running from certain death. Above them all, the gods Mask and Shar play a game that holds the world at sway. Below them, Cale, Riven, and Rivalen are their pawns.

Through this story, Kemp plunges the reader into a series of character conflicts. Abelar wars with his faith. Cale wars with his morality. Mags continues his struggle with his fiend self. Each character journeys through the plot to a resolution of various extremes.

More than just character plays, the story takes the tale to a new level. Bigger games are revealed. The culmination of the battle with Kesson Rel brings everyone together. Yet the ending lies somewhere beyond.

The resolution of this story was very satisfying. I loved the way certain plots unfolded and were resolved. Beyond the main story of Cale and Mask, I liked how Abelar and Brennus both came in as supporting threads. Between them and others, it made a splendid vehicle to move the plot in various directions. In the end, it became a story about duty, destiny, and self. Each character at one point or another must struggle with their duty and destiny. Through their struggles they define themselves. And yet through those struggles, some of them end up finding themselves.

If you’re looking for engaging fantasy series to dive into, The Twilight War is great one to invest in. I give Shadowrealm a five out of five metal bikinis.
