Princess Leia #3 continues Leia’s adventure across the galaxy in search of Alderaanians. This issue leads her and Evaan to Sullust. They not only find another group of Alderaanian survivors, but a crackpot leader who tries to get Leia killed. But hey, all’s well that ends well right?

When I first opened issue #3 and flipped past the opening crawl page, I immediately thought there was a change in artists. The artwork looked horribly simplistic. I flipped back, checked the names, then dug out my copy of #2. Same artists. I flipped through #2 and realized that the art there wasn’t much better. That’s when I came to the realization that Star Wars, Darth Vader and Kanan – The Last Padawan simply have me spoiled on good artwork. The others are just so much better. It makes it difficult to come back to Princess Leia.

To be fair, there is some good artwork buried in the panels. However, the plain, simplistic style leaves so much to be desired. There’s just no detail, especially in the backgrounds, even in the big panels. The coloring is also drab with an overwhelming about of brown/orange earth tones. Visually this issue is a let down.

Story wise things aren’t much better. Leia’s dialog doesn’t channel her character very well. More often than not, the dialog just doesn’t sound like something Leia would say. Beyond that, the story isn’t surprising or impressive. Leia and Evaan go to Sullust, and as the opening crawl gives away, the batch of survivors they find aren’t welcoming. For some reason, which isn’t explained, the leader is so distrustful of Leia that I initially thought she didn’t even recognize her. The traitor plot the last issue was working in comes into play and brings the Empire down on the Alderaanians and they blame Leia. That’s the gist of the plot which is very straightforward. I did like the way Leia and R2 beat the Imps and how she ended up gaining the trust of the Alderaanians. However this series isn’t winning me over. I was hopping Princess Leia #3 would bring improvement, but it hasn’t. As below average comic, I give this one a two out of five metal bikinis.
