It’s almost over, and Poe Dameron #30 begins the end of Black Squadron’s tale. Off on their last mission, they’re trying to help another planet against the First Order, but the odds are once again stacked against them. The question is, can they live to tell the tale?

The issue opens with Jess’ message recounting what Black Squadron has been up to. After their last failure trying to gain allies, they headed to Ikkrukk. There, they pick up a distress call as they planet is already under attack by the First Order. Undeterred, Black Squadron decides to offer what assistance they can. Jess pulls off a near death landing, but the comic ends with an extremely grim and dark panel. It looks like all is lost. Sura might even be dead. And honestly, I have no idea where the story is going to go next.

First off, this issue has some great artwork. Angel and Arif are nailing it with awesome visuals. The ships, the characters and the locations look great. The action is fierce, the emotion is engrossing, everything is top notch. Charles Soule sneaks in some really good humor, and ends it on an emotionally gripping note that leaves you to wonder if there’s going to be a happy ending or not. Regardless, this issue delivers both a great story and great artwork.

With the end of the series almost in sight, Poe Dameron looks like it might go out on a high note. Poe Dameron #30 is certainly a great example of some good comic storytelling. I give it a five out of five metal bikinis.
