Poe Dameron #23 moves the story along as the positions shift with the characters. Leia goes from having Lor San Tekka in her grasp, to completely losing him. Meanwhile, they have to deal with Malarus.
The issue opens on Cato Niemoidia as Black Squadron fends off the swarm of droid fighters and prepares to fight Malarus. Poe begs anyone who will listen to get him a ship, which happens, and then he’s off to fight Malarus. As expected, Poe wins, though Malarus doesn’t die. She does get captured, though. It’s kind of an ugly fight with Malarus shooting drugs into her eye and Poe begging like a little kid for someone to give him a ship. The fight itself isn’t too bad, but I kind of wish Soule could have handled Poe getting a fighter a little better.
The other important part of the story takes place on Leia’s ship, which Terrex now controls. He frees Lor San Tekka and calls up Phasma, offering her Tekka in return for freedom from his implants. While he can’t remove them himself, he does find a way to disable them…by shocking himself repeatedly in the head. It’s brutal, but it works, and I like the position it puts Terrex in. He’s desperate, barely in control, but somehow finding himself on top again. We’ll see how it goes.
All in all, the story has some fun moments, a few odd moments, but in the end, it works. The artwork is pretty good with lots of detail, realistic faces, and an art style that manages to blend the realism with the comic art without it contrasting. Angel does a great job of capturing the action and emotion, bringing it all to life. Plus the colors by Arif are outstanding. Not only is the coloring great, but the lighting, too.
Overall, I give Poe Dameron #23 a four out of five metal bikinis. It’s pretty good.
