To say that Star Wars Legacy is one of the best Star Wars comic series ever made is not hyperbole. The series ran for 50 issues, spawned a bonus arc, War, and lives on with the Legacy series being done by Corrina Bechko and Gabriel Hardman. However, it’s that first run of 50 that truly defines the series with its lush artwork and engrossing storylines. For anyone who has not bought the series yet, the Legacy Book 1 hardcover is definitely the way to go. It’s a great entry point for fans who have never read a Star Wars comic and an excellent choice for collectors who want a quality edition that will last for years to come.

The Legacy Book 1 HC collects the first nineteen issues of the series and finishes with the Legacy Handbook, an awesome little guide to the series. Inside you’ll find Broken, Allies, Noob, Trust Issues, Ready to Die, Ghosts and Claws of the Dragon. Now I never did pickup up the #0 issue or #0 1/2 issue, so I’m not sure if the Legacy Handbook is a straight recopy or if it’s slightly different. The handbook section does run at 33 pages in length and includes nice concept art, ship designs, locations and information on all those elements. If I had to guess, I’d say it’s probably the #0 1/2 issue. Also included are images of all the covers as well as the alternate covers. Overall, the book runs in at a whopping 440 pages.

The format of the book is also worth some discussion. It has a nice, thick hardcover format that’s similar to the trade paperback hardcovers like Darth Vader and the Ghost Prison. It also has a convenient binding that does not interfere with turning the pages. The book measurements are 6 x 9 inches which is just a little bigger than the typical Star Wars omnibus, but smaller than the typical Star Wars trade paperback collection. The thickness of the book is almost on par with two omnibuses (or omnibi).

For anyone who hasn’t read the series yet, I won’t spoil it, but you’re certainly in for a treat. Legacy explores the far future of the Star Wars galaxy with all new characters, ships and conflicts. You don’t need to know any of the expanded universe to enjoy it, so it’s a great place for new readers to dive in. For seasoned book readers who haven’t ventured into comics, this is an even better place to start. First off, you’ll get to see what happens to the Yuuzhan Vong, Mandalorians and Sith in the future. Secondly, unlike normal comics, this collection packs in the length, depth and quality that you would expect in a great Star Wars novel. You can pick this one up and enjoy hours of reading time.

With the content packed into this volume, and the quality of the stories therein, Legacy Book 1 is a great buy. Whether you’re replacing all those individual issues you collected or you’re diving in for the first time, this is one collection you should definitely consider. As an owner of some of the individual issues and all of the trade paperbacks volumes, I’d have to say this is my favorite version so far. I give it a five out of five metal bikinis all around.
