Jinnrise #8 doesn’t waste time as the story plunges full forward. A new genie is revealed, the bad guys up their game, and the plot begins to show signs of the end game. With colorful, detailed artwork and an intriguing story, this issue is a good one. From here on out though, there be spoilers, so fair warning.

First up, the story moves to Beijing as the characters continue their hunt for new genies. It’s now down to just Harris and Andrew on who gets the next genie. The story also touches upon Harris’ secret some more, but it’s not yet revealed just what that secret is. With the unlocking of a new genie, more monsters are unleashed, yet a new ally is gained.

The bad guys in this issue do some evil plotting of their own. The Kibr uses a strange looking alien to find the location of the other genie bottles. Like any true evil mastermind, he plans to use this power not only to destroy this universe, but another one as well. At first, all their evil actions seem pretty clear cut and boring. However, the writers throw in a surprise. Last warning for major spoilers…Lahasad Brim turns on the Kibr and joins the good guys. There was some foreshadowing for this in previous issues, and I’m glad they did it. It adds some much needed depth to the bad guys.

The art in this issue is as good as the story. It’s a different style with some slightly cartoony depictions of the characters, but it actually works really well. It’s unique and appealing.

Overall I give Jinnrise #8 a four out of five. It’s a satisfying addition to the series and paves the road for some interesting turns to come.
