Jedi Academy: Return of the Padawan
Jeffrey Brown continues his Jedi Academy trilogy with Return of the Padawan, a book that looks at all the troubles and joys of school with fun artwork and a Star Wars twist. For fans of the first book, you can look forward to seeing all of Roan Novachez’s friends return as they tackle their second year at Jedi school. Ewok pilot returns, as do the bullies, but there are also new faces like Gammy the Gamorrean chef. It all comes together in an entertaining scrapbook style journal with mini-comics, journal entries, and comical black and white illustrations. However, going back to school isn’t always a great thing.
After ending his first year at the Jedi Academy on a high note, Roan can’t wait to go back to school and see all his friends. He’s amped about getting to do starfighter training, learn more Force tricks from Yoda, and hang out with Pasha and Gaiana. Yet Jeffrey Brown has some surprises in store for Roan and the reader. Things don’t work out as well as expectations. Roan struggles with starfighter training, runs into some road bumps with his friends, and even finds himself befriending the bullies. On the plus side, there’s a field trip to Hoth, a lightsaber fencing tournament, and a build-a-droid group project. All along the way, there’s lots of humor, and of course it all works out in the end.
As a kids book, Return of the Padawan has lots of fun pictures, humorous jokes, and ties to school that everyone can relate to and maybe even learn from. But best of all, it’s all Star Wars themed which makes it that much more fun to read. However, this is a book adults can enjoy too. The incidents at school are certainly things I can relate to, and it brings back some nostalgic memories. Toss in the Star Wars humor and it’s a done deal. Besides, I can’t get enough of Ewok Pilot.
So regardless of your age, Jedi Academy: Return of the Padawan is a great book to check out. It’s entertaining, jam packed with artwork, and is just the thing for the new school year or remembering years gone by. I give it a five out of five nexu.
