Injustice Gods Among Us: Year Three Annual #1 contains two stories, “A Proper Mage” and “Fall of the Titans”. “A Proper Mage” kicks things off with Batman recruiting Rose and Doctor Occult to take out Raven and Wonderwoman. This story fills in some of the blanks of previous issues as both Raven and Wonderwoman met their fates off page. Here we find out what happened.
The story starts out with some very choppy panels as Rose and Doctor Occult do some trading of mystic objects. They finally get what they need to take out Raven. Unfortunately for them, Raven does some damage. Constantine comes in for the assist, but in the end, makes a right ass of himself. It’s an interesting story, but also a little flawed. It makes good integration of Constantine’s character, but cast him in a very negative light. Too much so, in my opinion. I also would have enjoyed a bit more of Rose and Doctor Occult as these are new characters to me and I know nothing about them. On the other hand, the artwork is pretty good, so at least it looked nice. And it does fill in some story gaps.
“Fall of the Titans” also plugs in some story holes by showing why the Teen Titans have been absent. Sadly the story doesn’t make the Teen Titans very interesting, so I’m actually not looking forward to them returning anytime soon. They come off as cheap imitations of their grown-up counterparts. None of them capture the same strength of character as the “A” list heroes.
The artwork is still pretty good, though Starfire is really distracting. Her outfit not only defies physics, but is barely there to begin with. And does Connor have a whole closet of the same wardrobe? He destroys his clothes in a nuclear blast and changes into a new set of the same clothes (which is just a pair of jeans and a black t-shirt with a red “S”).
Overall, I give Injustice Gods Among Us: Year Three Annual #1 a three out of five metal bikinis. It’s a middle of the road issue.
