Sometimes a comic can be pretty mellow, and sometimes they can pack in some action. Injustice Gods Among Us: Year Three #9 is twenty pages of thrill ride. From Nightwing turned Deadman finding a guy laughing like the Joker in Arkham Asylum to a mysterious new ally coming to save Superman from an enraged demon, there’s a lot going on in this issue. Brian Buccellato throws in action, laughs and great characters for a hell of a comic.

Now that Superman has found out where Batman has been hiding, they assault the Tower of Fate in full force. This leads to a big battle and lots of one on one fights between the heroes and villains. Superman versus Batman, Catwoman vs Sinestro, etc. My favorite match up is Harley Quinn versus Shazam. Brian does a great job of capturing Harley’s humor and melding it with the story. But it’s not all laughs as some heroes bite the dust. Once Trigon enters the frame, literal hell breaks loose. Some of the scenes are pretty epic…the god of war being gutted, Harley referencing the movie Legend, and Trigon being taken down. I also really enjoyed the spin they put on the Tower of Fate as it became that endless array of stairs painting.

One thing I did not get is who is the guy in the end with the hat and cigar? Again, I’m not that well versed in comics, so this character is completely unfamiliar to me. Hopefully future issues will clear this up.

The artwork keeps pace with the writing to present a great job of visual storytelling. There’s a lot of action and fighting in this issue, and a ton of characters, so the artists get quite the array of subject matter. Everyone looks great and it’s easy to follow along with the story without getting lost or confused by what’s going on. The artwork does a stellar job of filling in all the blanks. Rex Lokus tops it all of with some great coloring. The issue starts out with some darker, cool colors, thus offsetting the pages from the later panels which become dominated with fire. It’s a gorgeous comic.

In the end, Injustice Gods Among Us: Year Three #9 is a five out of five metal bikinis. It’s great. The characters, the story, the action, the humor, it’s all top notch.
