There’s a lot of new development in Injustice Gods Among Us: Year Three #5 as pieces are moved into play. Swamp Thing finally makes his appearance, Deadman goes into action, and a dead hero is reborn. There’s also a new puzzle piece brought to bear with Spectre’s current identity. If he’s not who he’s suppose to be, who is he?

Character dynamics and power plays abound in this issue. At first it’s Superman threatening Constantine to find out where Raven is. Then Deadman, Boston Brand, possesses Shazam and confronts Spectre. Once that goes wrong, Constantine and Batman have a brief spat which gives Zatanna a great opportunity to step in. She’s been getting more page time lately, which is nice, as I’d like to know more about her. This leads to Swamp Thing, a question of alliances, and a tense reconciliation. With Swamp Thing in play, things could get interesting. I liked the justification for his allegiance, too. Nicely done.

In issue #3, there was some prophesying going on that involved a goddess. Well a goddess appears toward the end of this issue. Boston Brand calls her Rama Kushna. My limited comic knowledge comes into play as I have no idea who she is. Regardless, she provides comfort to brand and reforms a new hero. How this will play to Batman’s favor, I’m not sure yet. But it will definitely create some promising possibilities.

Artwise, we get to see some new characters in this issue. Deadman looks pretty neat, as do the other new characters, especially Swamp Thing. There’s one panel in particular, a small one with no dialog. Batman asks him a question and gets silence in return. But it’s not just silence, it’s a slightly red eyed Swamp Thing staring in judgement. When the artwork can add depth like that to the story, it’s always a good thing, and there are plenty of good moments throughout this issue. Deadman certainly got quite a few of them.

Another great combination of writing and artwork make Injustice Gods Among Us: Year Three #5 an outstanding comic. I give it a five out of five metal bikinis.
