I’m a Tom Taylor fan, so when I heard that Tom was going to tackle a story with both Batman and Superman, I knew I had to check it out. Just imagine, all your favorite superheroes laid out before you in a fresh story…one leading toward a mortal kombat battle royale. And it all starts with Batman.
The Dark Knight stares down at his city in worry. Things are too quiet. Where once there was crime, now there is fear. It seems the world has come under the rule of an iron fist. Or in this case, the steel fist of Superman. As a reader, this is the sort of thing that gobsmacks you in the unreality of your wildest imaginations. And this is only page one!
Batman, Superman, what could be better? How about the Joker? Green Lantern? And don’t forget Wonder Woman, Flash, Scarecrow, Harley Quinn, and other members of the Justice League. It’s an all star cast and thankfully Tom Taylor spins up a great little story for them. His trademark humor shines through. It also provides a nice counterpoint to the more serious opening and closing of the issue. Each character is done splendidly and is spot on. Batman comes off as an analytical, methodical detective. Joker is dark, comical, vindictive, and scheming. Superman is noble, charming, and at the heart of the story.
If you have even a remote interest in Batman or Superman, Injustice: Gods Among Us #1 is a must read. Really. It embodies the characters we love, and in a short amount of time, captures them beautifully. The issue is also nicely self-contained without an annoying cliffhanger. Sure we want to see what happens next, but with what happens, the reader can walk away satisfied and in awe of just how awesome it was. Read it. Love it. And Long for more. I give Injustice: Gods Among Us #1 a perfect five out of five metal bikinis.
