I Hate Fairyland #3 ramps things up by killing off the main character. Seriously, they kill off Gert. But…she’ll be back. Right?

Interestingly enough, one of my favorite parts was the opening page because they introduce–and kill–another narrator. I’m loving the gag. Picking up after that, we see the murderous results of Gert’s zombie faun slaying rampage in a glorious two page spread. How could it get any better? Well a slo-mo explosion walk away, a dragon, The Council of Elders and all their ridiculousness, a polkadot centaur, Gert pretty much getting killed twice and to top it all off, a opponent who can finally stand toe-to-toe with Gert. There’s a lot packed into this issue, and it’s all fun and over the top.

Matching the greatness of the humor and the story is the artwork. From cover-to-cover, the visuals are perfect. You’ve got the bloodied, battered anti-hero on the cover. There’s the severed teddy bear head on the back cover. And inside the panels are dripping with violence and comedy. Among all the greatness within, there’s a risky series of panels that portray a dead Gert after a tremendous fall. Of course she’s not completely dead, just mostly dead. Years pass as Larry waits for Gert to recover. He builds a house. Seasons go bye. He builds a bigger house, starts a family, has kids, gets divorced, and burns the whole thing down. Meanwhile Gert grows a ridiculous beard to show the long passage of time and the effect it’s had on her. There’s barely any dialog on these pages. It relies entirely on the artwork to tell the story. And it works. That’s a testament to how well the art does its job. It’s so good, that it can stand by itself.

I love the way the story is progressing. The art is still top notch, and the humor is just the right shade of devilishly brilliant. I give I Hate Fairyland #3 a five out of five metal bikinis.
