I Hate Fairyland #17 switches things up by removing Gert from the story. Seriously, there’s no Gert in this issue, which is kind of odd since she’s the main character and she’s normally in every issue. Instead, we get a look at the Fairyland postal service, another look at hell, and we see what kind of plan Horribella is up to.
The issue opens with Horribella nagging the Holy Dark One to fulfill his part of the deal. She delivered Gert to hell, so he has to give her…a box. Later on, we catch a glimpse of what’s in the box, but it’s never revealed exactly what it is. We see bones, Horribella works her magic, and we get some creepy looking creature that may or may not be a life leech. Paralleling that plotline is Duncan Dragon working his first day at the FPS. He gets the task of delivering the box to Horribella. The issue ends with the creature being unleashed upon the world.
The artwork is solid in this issue. There’s even a great full page shot of Duncan Dragon. Readers catch a glimpse of the Holy Dark One enjoying some quality torture time in hell, there’s the in’s and out’s of the FPS, and there’s Horribella’s crib on her little island. Thus plenty of fun imagery to enjoy.
With good artwork and an interesting story, the only thing missing is Gert. Honestly, it almost doesn’t feel right to read an entire issue with none of her to be seen. However, I’m sure she’ll be turning up soon enough. As is, I give this one a four out of five metal bikinis.
