There is something wild, and crazy, and fun, and it’s called I Hate Fairyland #1. You know that guy that does the cutesy Star Wars variant covers for Marvel? Well he’s doing his own comic story for Image. It still has the cute theme going for it with a fairyland filled with mushroom guys, fairies, candy lands and it stars a little girl in a pink dress who wished she could be whisked away to wonderland of imagination. But this isn’t a kids comic. This isn’t a comic for little girls who like princesses and gum drops. This is a comic for those with a mind bent for the darker side of humor. For those who laugh when cutesy things are being blown to bloody bits. In essence, it’s marvelous.

Before the carnage.

When I saw the cover for this comic, I was immediately interested. It depicts a little girl with a bloody axe surrounded by dead cartoon characters. It looked liked something I would draw and reminded me of my own fascination for dark humor. One time I had a teacher tell me I never drew anything warm and fuzzy, so I drew a cute little teddy bear…who was on fire. This comic is right up that alley. The vibrant colors and wonderful cartoony style all give way to a depiction of humorous violence as Skottie Young pours his imagination onto the page. For those who like the cover, the same style is utilized within, giving readers a full feast from cover to cover. Just flipping through the issue at the comic store, I was convinced that this one was worth a try on visuals alone. Besides, I was familiar with Skottie Young’s name with all the Star Wars coverage I’ve done. I wanted to give him a try and see what he could do. Thankfully, I was not disappointed.

First off, the imagery is great. From the line work, to the colors, to the big screaming text of the letters, this comic looks amazingly fun and vivid. But the images are married to some wickedly entertaining storytelling. By page three, the main character is already a bloody splat mark on the pavement. Surrounded by bright, cheery little characters, this little girl is bloody, bruised and broken. There are bones jutting out of her arm. Teeth missing. But hey! The fairy queen has a magic map and guide that will help the little girl get home! That’s how the story starts. From there, it just gets funnier and more violent. There’s nods to Star Wars, cartoon massacres, drugs, cannibalism, flying pigs and much much more. While the comic is self-censored to a degree–they say “Fluff that guy” or “Shut the hug up”–there’s still some dirty humor that’s spot on hilarious.

If you like dark humor, cartoon violence, great artwork and some mild dirty jokes, this may be the comic for you. Personally, I think it’s outstanding. It’s different, it looks great, it’s funny, and it pokes fun at the cutesy side of fairy tales. I Hate Fairyland #1 earns a five out of five metal bikinis. I can’t wait to see what they do next.
