Han Solo #1 is a fun little Solo and Chewie adventure as they go off and help a bunch of people and lose any monetary rewards along the way. Han insists he’s not part of the Rebellion, but keeps on helping everyone anyways. I’m not sure it bridges that well with the main Star Wars line, or even the other Han mini-series we’ve gotten from Marvel, as the storyline is getting crowded in this time period, but it’s an enjoyable story.

It starts out a short time after A New Hope as Han and Chewie are counting their reward money and talking about how they’ll be able to pay off Jabba and fix up the Falcon. Then Luke ruins their plans by giving them a mission for the Rebellion. They get side tracked as Han helps some smuggler friends with another job, which almost goes off well, but Han sticks around too long and everyone gets in trouble. Han saves them but loses his cargo that Luke gave him. When he doubles back to get it, he loses all his money. In the end he finishes the job for Luke, but winds up with another mission for the Rebels. All in all, the story keeps a light tone as it looks at Han’s good guy behavior warring with his smuggler profession.

The artwork does a good job of capturing Han, Chewbacca and everything else. While the colors aren’t as posh and glamorous as some super hero comics, it gets the job done and the color palettes change up to keep things from being boring. It’s easy enough to follow along with the story and the action never gets confusing.

With good artwork and a good story, Han Solo #1 isn’t too bad. However, it is a one-shot and it’s not a story that does anything revolutionary for the character. It’s a comic you can equally read and enjoy or skip and not miss anything. I give it a four out of five metal bikinis.
