Age of Resistance – General Hux #1 isn’t anything earth shattering, but it does dive deeper into the character of Hux. Anyone who happens to be a Hux fan might enjoy this one as it does more to build out the character than tear him down.

The issue opens with Hux as a child being tormented by his father and a fellow officer. It then flashes back to the present as Hux and Kylo Ren are crashing toward the surface of a planet in their shuttle. They are the only two to survive the crash, and they quickly come under attack from some local creatures. Kylo deals with the first one then gets overwhelmed. Hux, on the other hand, runs away, then comes out befriends their attacker by telling him the truth, mostly. He tells him about Kylo’s parents, and gets the person’s trust. They call out for help, and then Kylo and Hux leave the other person behind. The story goes on a bit more as Hux gets revenge against an old enemy, and Snoke provides some narration that doesn’t quite fully explain why he keeps Hux around. Mostly, the story just underlines and reinforces things we already know and have seen in the films.

The art is pretty good. There’s a lot of polish and lighting effects, crisp, clear line work, and it flows well.

As a one off Hux adventures, this issue is okay. We don’t really learn anything new about Hux, Kylo, Snoke or the First Order. It basically just reiterates how Hux is out for himself and how he doesn’t get along with Kylo, but they’re stuck with each other because of Snoke. If you’re a Hux fan, you might want to check this one out, but for everyone else, this one is optional. I give it a two and a half out of five stars.
