Galaxy’s Edge #3 tells a tale of how Hondo and Dok-Ondar once stole a kyber statue from the Guardians of the Whills. Of course they came across Chirrut, but the resolution is a little underwhelming. Three issues in, I’m not sure this mini-series is panning out all that well as the juggling between past and present stories is as expertly executed as it could be.

The issue opens with Remex running from some First Order troopers on Batuu. He gets stopped by somebody, but the encounter isn’t explained. I suppose that’s a storythread for the next issue. Anyways, Remex meets up with the others at Oga’s cantina, and they carry on with their plan. They meet with Hondo and try to hire him for a job. He recounts them with a story of how he once stole from the Guardians of the Whills. Now on one hand the story is pretty interesting. We get to learn more about Dok-Ondar, we gets some funniness from Hondo, and we get to see some Guardians and the inside of their temple. However, it’s kind of anticlimatic in that Chirrut lets them steal the statue. Back to current time, Hondo learns that the thieves are after a sword, one that Doctor Aphra was after as well. That sets up the next story, and the next flashback.

The artwork is stellar. The coloring, the linework, the character depictions, it’s all top notch and looks great. The problem with the comic is the framing device with all the flashbacks in each issue. It feels really forced, which isn’t good. Instead of getting lost in the story, you see the fingerprints of the writer, how they’re forcing this here and that there in order to make this work and tick off some boxes. There’s something missing to make it work rather than how it ends up. As is, I give this issue a three out of five metal bikinis. It’s okay, and if you’re a Hondo fan, you might want to check it out. But on the other hand, it’s skippable.
