Earth 2 Annual #2 lays out an origin story for a new Batman. Surprise surprise, the red and black Batman in Earth 2 is not Bruce Wayne. But they do have history together. Fair warning, if you don’t want to spoil the surprise, stop now.

Tom Taylor takes opportunity in this issue to dive into some flashbacks. We get to see the murder of Bruce Wayne’s parents. We even get to see the real Bruce Wayne Batman investigate the murder of the men responsible for his parents’ deaths. As the flashbacks go further, we get a glimpse of Bruce’s father, Thomas Wayne, and Alfred’s father, Jarvis Pennyworth. One of them winds up being the killer, and one of them is the new Batman. I won’t completely spoil the surprise, so you’ll have to read the issue and find out. It’s a good story.

Backing up the origin tale is some great artwork. There’s some really nice character attention, cool panel arrangements, and I liked the retro styling they went with on the old Batman. The coloring matches perfectly with the artwork and does a good job of changing with the time periods.

Now that we know who Batman is, the perspective of the story has changed. Is this someone we can root for? Maybe. But whether we root for them or not, at least we now have a sense of their background and character motivation. With that in place, the story touches on a much deeper level. Let’s just hope Superman doesn’t kill this Batman in the next couple issues.

For laying out an entertaining origin story and portraying it with some excellent artwork, I give Earth 2 Annual #2 a five out of five metal bikinis.
